Myshank Diamond Comparisons

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Myshank Diamond Comparisons

Hello All,

I very much appreciate the service Myshank offers and am looking to buying needles for my Caruso from them.

I'm curious what everyones experiences have been between cutting with natural vs synthetic diamond

For someone moving from embossing with a metal stylus, to cutting, what would you recommend?

thanks

I can not give a direct answer to the products you are referring.
Technically there is no difference anymore between synthetic and natural.except to have a few boron atoms and a way better understanding of the direction of growing.
From the ethical aspect we don’t even have to talk.
if you check under what circumstances natural diamonds are produced and what all kind of dirty shit is involved.
So for me the Fraunhofer way of producing was a big game changer around 10years ago or even more.
Finally we had a market as for every product.
Getting stones is so much easier then before where you had to deal with total intransparent people.
For me natural diamonds are only an option if you like to support shady structures.bad guys and exploiting people and nature. Really no reason to stay on natural.
The rest is pure propaganda by the one’s who monopolized the business.

But let’s focus on technical facts and I can see only much better results with lab grown diamonds
I don’t talk about the yellowish stuff that was sold 15-20years ago.its all about contemporary cvd bars based on Fraunhofer invention and similar.
The main important thing nowadays is the quality of faceting. So I guess that’s always on the good side at my shank. Buy never checked the difference.
Make sure if you order diamond it is diamond.there where some proven stories of other material sold as diamond by some people. But as long it’s real diamond the sharpening is key.
I use synthetic ones only since many years and the results are as good as the people do the sharpening

Happy cutting f.

Somewhere I've read that synthetic diamonds have better structure than natural because they are 'created' in controlled environment. Congratulations for making the big move to cutting! :D

thank you flozki and boryo for chiming in. The answer seems clear; synthetic is the way to go.

i bought some cvd bars to experiment, and indeed "the results are as good as the people do the sharpening" ...and their tools...having tried on my own i have a new appreciation for what professionals can achieve.

Synthetic diamond is undoubtedly better, more reliable and more durable than natural diamond. I have only used synthetic diamonds to produce my stylus and the result is always very good, with some stylus I can cut 50 12" records without a significant increase in background noise.

Nice post Flozki, agree the quality of manufacturing has improved since the days for the yellow synthetic diamonds for sure. I am so glad that the supply is easy to get now, where historically it was so hard.
Happy to learn something new.

Hi All,
I've just started doing CVD diamond stylus and found that yellow is no good, off white or slight brown is way to brittle at the point. Only clear white CVD is usable but synthetic is the way to go. Its all about the polishing and scope work. So far so good. Some are noisey Im not perfect yet and improving all the time as I find new things that get consistant results.
