Pictures of old lacquers

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Nice pics - thanks.

Those metal boxes were NEVER thrown away - they were the industry standard for shipping cut lacquers in. You could stick the address label in the middle (over the knob) and couriers could never work out how to open the can so the lacquers always got to their desitnation without fingerprints.

Here's some goodies I found at the local Salvation Army shop today....

Mostly 8" discs; they were found in this album:

Six pockets. Four of them contained Wilcox-Gay aluminium base lacquer discs, two each with the following styles of labels:

The other side of this disc is unused and the other blue label disc is blank on both sides (lacquer fully intact).

One pocket had this plastic-coated cardboard 6 1/2" Presto disc:

And then there were three of THESE mystery discs in another pocket. They are 7 1/8" diameter with a 1 1/2" hole like a 45. They seem to be made of celluloid or a very similar material; all have moderate scuffing throughout, and all are blank. (Were these recorded by cutting or embossing?)

Labels are printed on them like labels on flexidiscs or soundsheets.

There was also a couple of 8" Capitol Pro-Discs (both cut on both sides). Here's one of them:

sweeeeet, thank you for the pictures. I hope I will have the time to make some pictures of the actual lacquers for you guys next time I'm at the studio.

By the way, we did a test cut with one of the Master sound system lacquers, and it worked surprisingly well!

Yes indeed, this is the first time i have seen something other than my lathe that's made by M.S.S in the UK. It was run by Cecil Watts and he is credited with inventing the lacquer disc.
Thanks nice pics

Yes of course, look here:https://lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?t=2238&mforum=lathetrolls (scroll down the post)
Incidentally i note the boxes of MSS lacquers have "Master Sound System"
printed on the box, MSS was originally "Margeruite Sound Studio"
And it was a lathe like mine that cut the Beatles' first ever recording, when they where called "The Quarry Men"
