custom cut stylus? rayotek.com

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

custom cut stylus? rayotek.com

I'm thinking about trying to have this company fashion a sapphire stylus.

http://www.rayotek.com/sapphire_custom_dome_tube_rod_prism.htm

"Rayotek's mission is to provide its customers with a full-service facility that specializes in engineering -design and manufacture of precision sapphire, glass, fused quartz and fused silica products."

It looks like they could do it no problem. My only issue would be attaching it to the steel rod or shank for mounting. any ideas?

shooo! $500 is a pretty penny to me. but.... i'm broker than a joke. If i had a decent job with decent hours I would definitely give this a try.

does apollo go through a company like this for their stylus? I don't see anything on their site about about them manufacturing their own styli.

They do manufacture their own styli... The receptionist was telling me how she was in training to cut the facets.

I guess it depends on how many styli you can get for the $500 minimum... did they mentuion that?

It'd be interesting to see if they could make stylii without the polishing facets... maybe for better cutting on non-lacquer material?

I'm sure there is at least 10 guys on this forum who would put down $100 each on diamonds if they could do them and do them right.

Do you have that adamant stylus brouchure that is up here with the facets to the exact decimal points? If not search for it and send it to them to see if it's something they can do

Sounds like we have a contestant for diamond supply in the works :) good work man!
all the best!

On their website, it looks like they just do glass and sapphire, unless I'm mistaken

thank you! I just sent over the brochure and a request for more info regarding quantity and pricing.

I'm not very knowledgeable on the various types of styli. The only cutter I have ever seen in person is my Presto K8. Would an adamant stylus fit in my presto? Or does it depend on the shank it is mounted on?

You just have to make sure you have the right shank for your cutterhead

no luck

"I showed your drawings to engineering and they said “NO BID”. It does not fall within our capabilities. You might want to try a company called Insaco (http://www.insaco.com/) @ 215-536-3500. Good luck!"

They don't do diamond, but a cheaper sapphire alternative would still be great.

I'm going to email them tonight. Should this diagram be enough information for them? Image

I could send the whole pdf (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/346642/ADAMANT.pdf) but I think there's a lot of extra information regarding specific cutter heads that they would not need.
