Diamond Stylus Available now

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

I've cut a few 7"s and LPs so far with brilliant results. I don't understand why people are having chip issues, mine comes off just fine into the suction tube. Steven is offering a great product to people, don't let the lack of reply steer you wrong, his diamonds are the real deal and actually work!
all the best!

yes, copper can be cutted, but must be soft copper and you need
a DMM Lathe to do this.
copper chip comes off very hard, you need a special suction for this,
copper blanks must be complete flat on the turntable and must have
a perfect, shiny surface...
be careful! :) stylus can be dead very soon...

What makes a DMM head more able to cut copper over normal heads?

the head must be strong, but the head is not the problem,
the problem is the chip, read my postings.
and, you need a special, soft copper for cutting, some people
did cuts into electronic blanks.. but this is an experiment

Did you buy it on ebay? Every sapphire that pops up on there is listed as a diamond...

no, it came with my lathe when I bought it.. they never told me it was a diamond, I just assumed because of its coloring.. I just didn't know that sapphires could come in white.. I'm not a jeweler..
generally its for reproduction.. but i like to play wif it sometimes.. :P

I think I have made a good decision, and I'm going to stick with acetates for now.. I feel you trade sound quality for durability with the poly, even on a calibrated and proper setup..

For DJ's that scratch (battle DJ's) this stuff is perfect, you can make some great one off battle records with these for sure.. but for what I'm doing DJ wise I need the better quality sound..

I recently covered my lathe in dyamat extreme, and I'm surprised at the results.. I cut down the motor hum, and I have seemed to have improved my cutting head..

I basically wrapped the head in this stuff, and now it sounds like a dream. I covered the top of the platter, and 12" circle under the platter (to give room for the idlers). I plan on covering the overhead parts as well.. Looks like shit I have to say, but the sound improvement is worth the poor looks..

How noisy was your motor to begin with?

I've got a motor that is LOUD and you can feel the vibration on the plinith. It's in the middle of being worked on by Kris, so I haven't cut anything with it, but I'm wondering if the Dynamat would make it usable, as I don't think it will sound very good with the motor the way it is. Would be worth the $40 of Dynamat if it will reduce the rumble I'm sure will be present without it, but I don't want to throw that $40 at it, unless I know it will work.

It dampened my head and platter pretty well (it doesn't ring anymore).. There is an audible difference between before and after. I found a 18" x 32" piece on ebay for about 20 bucks. There is still a slight 60hz hum present in the silent groove, but as soon as the music hits, it more clear, and less distorted at high levels (I cut very bass heavy music).

I'm really starting to wonder if the hum is from the electricity running through the body of the thing. Maybe it's time to hard wire everything and stop using the body as neutral. Then ground the motor to earth (3 prong). So that the only electricity touching the head is from the amp.

TBH: I never heard another presto, so I have nothing to compare it to.

I agree. The presto has no ground at all, and all grounding lead directly to the chassis. The only way I can see of removing it would be to hard wire the microscope, and stylus heater (use 2 wires, not one). I can then ground the motor using a grounded power cord. I feed my amp using an optical digital connection and there is no hum present in the amp, if i listen using head phones.
