vacuum pump vms70

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

hi guys,

in stead of a "real" pump my vms70 came with a vacuum cleaner which works well i assume (currently assembling the lathe) but it makes a hella lot of noise so im looking for a replacement pump. now i found this pump online and was wondering if its powerfull enough:

Type: suctioncompressor, oilfree
Motor: 1/5 hp (150 Watt)
1450 / 1700 rpm
Standardvolume: 20 - 23 L/min
Max. pressure: 7,0 bar
Max. Vacüum: 600 mm Hg
Hoseconnect: 1/8" 9,7 mm
Noise: ca. 40 dB

any help or suggestions appreciated.

My vaccuum is a modern replacement for the original. I will find out the source and try to get a model number for you.

Mine is encased in a wooden enclosure that dampens the noise. Not sure if the enclosure is original or custom made. I put it on a folded towel and that keeps it from transferring the noise through the floor.

I would say that would work. It was not uncommon to use a vacuum cleaner as a replacement. You can run the vacuum cleaner off a 110 volt step-down transformer to reduce the noise (and the suction). You can also place the vacuum cleaner in another room to reduce the noise it makes.

First thing is to get the lathe up and running.

placing it in another room is not an option. vacuum cleaner on 110v would still be rather noisy and transformer would cost the same as this pump (new only 90 euro)...

@Misjah
Could you also provide a link to the full website rather than just the image please?
I may wish to buy one of these myself soon.:)

Thx

PS - dug out some of your early stuff on DJAX the other day... still rocks!

Search for a posting I posted a while back about this issue.

Somebody suggested pumps for a fish tank, which I thought was a cool idea.

Misjah,

I puchased my lathe restored by Al Grundy. He used this vacuum motor as a replacecment for my lathe. It is enclosed in a wooden box to help with the noise.

I got the shipping box for the motor. This is what is on the label of the box. I believe 2M192 is the model number.

My system came with a hoover power pak with all hoses to work with.

For my AM32, 40liter per minute work very well,
I use a yusanaga LP-40 pump, very quiet, but to make it
nearly silent, I put it in a cheap plasic box with some foam
(from my old recording booth).
but pump is not very cheap, arround 275 Euros new...

i'm using the same pump but a bit bigger.
Don't go for a small one that's a waste of money i have tried it and had to send it back.
cheers
