diamond stylus for grampian b/d

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hit up The Shank and get a short one or a long one so you can trim it to size
all the best!

Jay or others using "The Shanks" styli -
How many hours of cutting are you getting from one diamond?

I'm not using one yet, I'm still trying to decide if I should invest in a stylus, or buy a box of 50 acetates..

Poly is waaaay cheaper, but i have a bunch of sapphires that are good..

so either way, it would cost me about the same amount.. $400 for a stylus, or a box of dubs.

box of dubs I know how to cut already, and I know they sound good..

diamond styli could be damaged very quickly if I'm not careful, but the material is about 90% cheaper then acetates (found a great supply for about $1.50 per 10" if i cut the circles myself)

now since I never heard a poly cut, I don't know how they compare. From my tests with the white sapphire, I think they COULD sound just as good, and they would last as long as vinyl theoretically..

with my up and coming tour quickly approaching, I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get the dubs, since I heard shank takes up to 3 weeks for shipment on styli.

really wanted to cut my set on poly, so I'd only need one copy of each record to get through the tour. If I use acetate, I'll have to cut doubles of everything, just in case..

so for me its a catch 22, with no right answer..

I believe so, at least for presto/fairchild(462), and grampian(362) shanks..

People using neumann's can get vinylium styli
generally its for reproduction.. but i like to play wif it sometimes.. :P

I've cut about 12 records on mine so far and it's doing great. Everything from a minimal techno 12" for a friend of mine to some alternative stuff on 7" and some dub reggae 7" and some folk and metal, all resulting in great sounding cuts
all the best!
