Does anyone have samples of Peter King's lathe cuts?

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hey there secret society, (Freemasons) 8)

Just wondering about the quality of Peter Kings cut in volume comparison to a traditional vinyl.

Also about the volume comparison of a Presto cutter on Polycarb compared to traditional vinyl.

Out of the two cutters mentioned which one is louder?

Does anyone know how close they come to standard vinyl?

I figure if Peter Kings records are of standard for people to buy his cuts, one would be inclined to get similar levels.

Thanks y'allllllllllllllllllllll

He sent me one of his lathe cut discs about 20 years ago. Level was average, fidelity was average. I dont know what he is doing these days. Being one of the first to offer lathe cut discs, he created a buzz that has worked well for him. I would think you would get a higher fidelity cut with a Vinylrecorder.

as a fellow 'lathe cut record' guy,
I've heard a couple of his cuts, and cuts by almost every person offering short run records.
They're honestly all about the same, with a few exceptions on the lower end.

You're going to get surface noise, but depending on the track it might work out well for you.
Though Peter Kings heads are stereo (from what I've seen), he grinds steel needles to emboss the grooves,
the imaging is not what I would call 'stereo'. I'm sure Mike (PIAPTK) can speak more accurately on this,
as he's a fellow cutter, who got started by ordering lathe cuts from Peter.

If you'd like a test cut from me, they're $7 ppd in the US.

Peter was my "mentor" of sorts.

It's been a couple years since I got cuts from him, and, like Tyler, I've heard cuts from the only 3 or 4 other people that do non-diamond (aka somewhat affordable) poly cuts for hire. Peter's cuts absolutely blow all of ours out of the water.

And, according to his site (run by one of his customers, since Peter is a technophobe and doesn't use a computer), after the earthquake shut him down for a while, he has increased fidelity and stereo separation (which was always an issue, despite his using stereo heads, somebody had mentioned that embossing by it's nature decreases stereo separation).

Peter's records in the first few years I used him (2003-2005) were hit or miss, from mediocre fidelity to pretty good, but about 2005 or 2006, the quality really went through the roof. Not really sure about volume.

All that being said, you can't expect ANY lathe cut on plexi to be completely comparable to a pressed record. But i'd say Peter's records get to at least 90% fidelity.
