Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

I posted a video of my machine running all 3 speeds for comparison to another lathe that's experiencing noise and rumble. I thought the video would be useful to other people so here is the link.

I might shoot one with playback.

man those Bodine Motors are nice and quiet compared to the one I'm using, too bad they run at the wrong speed here in the UK.

Did you have to dissassemble the gear box at all to service it?

When i first purchased the unit i basically had to do a full tear down. I actually wish i had taken it a little further then i did. But because it was stored in what was basically a unconditioned attic space, all the rubber components were shot, the fluid in the gearbox was dried up and most of the greese had hardened.

I put some singer sewing machine oil in the bodine motors for good measure.

I got a photo of the inner workings of the overhead I figured might help some people troubleshooting. My overhead would just stop running, and I believe it was one of these little arms was not behind the retainer clip.

I moved them out of the way in the photo because I'm going with a motor.

It's been awhile. I failed less then before......sorta. my grooves are way too deep and my l.p.i. motor slipped towards the center of the disk.

I changed to embossing because I think it's where I should have started all along as others had suggested. My thoughts are, not enough heat on the pvc and the stylus. The grooves sounded like hiss and static had a baby. I also probably put too much weight on the head. I was closer to 8 mil then 4mil. Brake parts cleaner was a bad idea but turtlewax didn't seem to do much. I put only 3 or so wraps on the embossing cone which I think contributed to the stylus being stone cold.

I have gotten a lot dialed in lately. But, still quite a ways to go. I built an meter panel and heat stylus supply into that same panel. I did get the limit switches working, but still working towards a head lift option. Swapped the 33 motor and it helped a lot, tried with the 45 and must have messed up on building a new bracket because it did not grip the flywheel to push the platter. Phew!
