Harara [Hara] portable lathe

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

There is a great app called “RPM” that we use. But your accelerometer in your phone isn’t super accurate, so you have to test it on a 1200 to see what speed it’s reading on a turntable you KNOW is at 33.3. My app reads about 33.6 when it’s spinning at 33.3.

My Hara M-180 is supposed to run at 45rpm but it actually runs at about 57rpm with the 100V transformer. I use Audacity and I speed the song up to about 25.8% before I cut. Sounds beautiful when playing on a 45rpm turntable when the amp in the lathe wants to work right.

do you use a voltage converter from 120 to 100? I got a hara recently and wondering if I need one. the amp buzzes like mad. I'm wondering if maybe it has some blown caps or if the voltage difference is a problem.
who cut one?
