Ah, OK. But why do you need those? Are they actually connected to the rest of the grooves, or are they on their own for some reason?

Or maybe what your describing is just the silent part at the beginning and end of the record. I'm confused...

Each side of every record is one groove. Lead in is the silent part of the beginning and lead out is the silent part of the side's end. You can find more informations on youtube.

Lead in grooves are there so that people have a quarter inch of space in which to drop the needle to avoid dropping it after the beginning of the first song or accidentally dropping it off the disc.
The lead out groove moves the groove to the middle of the disc so that an auto return turntable gets tripped and the arm returns to the arm rest.
