3in records, Crosley etc
Hello,
I was curious what everyone thought of the 3in record? Looks like they are lathe cuts. Do you think this will only be a Crosley thing or will other manufacturers pick up on it? Anyone know who makes them?
Also, I tried to do a cut on 3in CDR but my lathe(ROK M5) won't go that small, so that really got me interested in how its done.
Cheers

The VR can cut records that small. I don't believe a Rek-O-Kut or Presto can cut them that small. Maybe with some crazy adapter for the head but even then I am still not sold it's possible.
They actually used to be a "thing." piaptk has one from way back and has a little stack of records to go with it. Super cool. I'm debating picking one up just because it's cute and campy. I also read that it's $70 which is a bit steep and it only comes with 1 record. I don't see it becoming a full blown movement with the 3" records being produced like typical 12, 10 and 7 inches are.

Small diameter records can be done on machines without a "contact" overhead (has to be placed on the center of the disc) and with a removable drive pin. This video shows it being done on a Scully:

THANK YOU! I've been trying to find that video for ages.

The 3”s they are selling are DEFINITELY not lathe cuts.
You could make them on a k8 if you hang the head over further to the left.
The Philco 3” player that these are modeled after would play 45s as well. Crosley screwed up not making these do it too.
They are fun though.

yeah they're doing some sort of injection molding from what I hear.
I've already done a few 3" cuts on the VR, some on blank mini CDRs, super fun.
really hoping to nab one of these players from my local record store so I can test em

Actually you don't have to hang the head over, just loosen the set screws on the cutter arm and shift it over in relation to the gear. I've cut records as small as 1 1/2" on my k-10.piaptk wrote:The 3”s they are selling are DEFINITELY not lathe cuts.

Im really jazzed to start a TINY label (get it!?) focusing on releasing independent music for the format.
we'll see how it goes!
