Heart - Magic Man - homegirl vs home, girl

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Heart - Magic Man - homegirl vs home, girl

With the new 45 RPM 180 gram green vinyl double-disc all-analog set coming out next year
(the first of a number of scheduled Heart audiophile releases in 2021), the same oft-held
discussion about whether a comma belongs in only ONE of the refrains and not both has been
resurrected once again.

For all the bored people here during the pandemic, here is an excerpt of the lyrics in question

"Come on home, girl" Mama cried on the phone
(implying that she shouldn't be out on her own yet)
"Too soon to lose my baby yet, my girl should be at home"
But try to understand, try to understand
He's a magic man

"Come on homegirl" he said with a smile
(implying that the man is from the same hometown and she should listen to him)
"I cast my spell of love on you, a woman from a child"
But try to understand, try to understand
He's a magic man.

Ann and Nancy Wilson have remained mum on the topic for over 40 years in interviews.

Me I say it make a lot better sense if the man is calling the woman Homegirl
in a manipulatory sense - playing into the mother's fears - because anybody
that gets themselves (and whoever they are with) high that often and throws
that much caution and caring to the wind that often either can't have a stable
home - or if he does have one, it can't remain stable for long due to partying.
