Mackie Big knob

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Mackie Big knob

Hello!!

At the advice of some experts on here, I have purchased the Mackie big knob version 1.. to replace the Souri maxed out mixer.. And improve the sound quality..

Is there anything I should be aware of? (routing etc) I am aware that I need to convert RCA into 1/4" Jack, is there any sound quality issues with this? Why did Souri not use 1/4" or XLR? Are RCA cables ok?

If anyone is willing to share a routing guide for me, you will get good karma and save me hours of hair pulling..

I really appreciate any help!

Interesting! I would like to know more about this as well. I also own a Mackie Big knob and am about to change the original mixer.

In terms of routing and using a Big Knob, mine is like this

Cutting:

Audio Player
Big Knob
Cutter Amp

Playback:

SP10 MKII
Preamp
Level Meter
Monitoring

I do all my own iRIAA in the box, wanting the cleanest possible signal path for the cutting chain

a really good alternative is the monicon XL from Palmer !
really versatile routing.

mine is the same pretty much, with level meter between big knob and amp on the cutting chain.
the big difference is not monitoring while cutting, but in my experience I haven't missed it
making lathe cuts on a Presto 6N, HIFI stereo cuts on vinylrecorder

level meter between big knob and amp
on my side I think that is better to avoid to transit modulation by the meter and go directly to amp !
just feed the meter by another output of a splitter is reliable.
But in my set up I use RIAA from Souri main unit without problem.

Any chance someone can supply a routing video or detailed guide for an idiot (me!)

I struggled setting this up to start with when received from Souri..

So happy to rid of that mixer, but it’s so confusing the way it’s all routed…

I really appreciate it..

We have it all routed, and it s cutting good vinyl, but we are missing some of the elements, like balance control etc..

If anyone has a routing guide for VR, I will be eternally grateful!!

Balance is adjustable by the cutter amp volume, that is all it is doing, sending less signal to one of the sides as you turn the knob. What else is missing?
