Yes yes yes. I'm sure my answser sounds absurd. But, I have yet to hear any other way to produce short runs on a shoe string budget... At least what I suggested is actually possible with some setup. This is exactly how Peter King operates so we know it to be possible.
I'm sure you could rig up whatever you needed for the the three VR's including modern brushless motors for the platter and some sort of vaccuum platter if you reall wanted that. Otherwise just use the center locking ring like Souri himself does...

You are blessed with an uncanny ability to see things from a practical perspective
As well as been able to do electronics visualise mechanical needs and picture in your mind how something can be done
Some people do not have that ability
I think you are falling in the same trap I fall into quite often
Expect much more from people than they are able to see deliver do etc
I am passing on a bit of old man's wisdom for you to ponder on
Cheers

As someone who has looked into building my own pressing plant on two occasions(I even bought 4 SMT presses for a SONG and gave them to a friend for what I paid...) I have some insight from an optimistic perspective still....because I did not do it
Strip it down- BECAuse you need a decent water connection and a boiler to run ONE press the dream of a single press running in your garage is near impossible.
Peter King is a one man show who can build his own systems. I am sure if he makes $100-200 a day he is happy. anyone can chain a few VR or old lathes together and do the same. It is a lot of work for the $ but the reward of being your own boss makes up for this

Yes I thank you for the reply and Im sorry for any missunderstanding!opcode66 wrote:You asked how to start producing copies for basically no money (20K is not much). I told you. You come back at me with a backhanded remark about professionalism. Not cool. I was only trying to help. You could hire someone to run the three lathes and produce up to 100 copies per day. That is a personal duplication plant for your budget. Not professional. But, exactly what you were asking for.DJ ALX wrote:I've been a professional ever since I stepped out of my teenage years and Id rather hire a professional to cut on a vms and press 300-500 copies rather than record one by one 100-300 records...

I think "visit a pressing plant" is really great advice. I think it's great advice ANY time this question comes up. I wonder how many people at Lathe Trolls have actually done so. Also, it's just a fun thing to do.
I only first visited Brooklyn Phono, one of Brooklyn's three pressing plants, a few months ago. It blew my mind. There's a LOT to think about when considering pressing records.

Hi,
Two years ago, I was in Nashville for a family function and a small group of us stopped by at URP and asked for a tour out of the blue. They took us through the entire plant (pressing, plating, printing) and spent about an hour with us. Even got to see the old apartment that was kept for black musicians to stay in during the 60's when is was really hard for them to find lodging. I think they might charge some nominal fee now, but its quite worth it if you are in the area.

Thomas a nice guy , he has, in my view, most likely the best plant in the USA a real credit to the manSteve E. wrote:I think "visit a pressing plant" is really great advice. His dedication to the art and craft, which is never or rarely given any credit, is beyond reproach

I visited URP this past holiday season. Although they were closed at the time they still took me through the plant. Pretty awesome. The apartment and party room are retro-sweet.
This video with Wanda Jackson and Jack White was shot there.

They were cool people and there was a ton of history there!
