Anti slip serrations on 7" records

Once you have cut a master laquer, you have metal stampers created and have records pressed from them. Discuss manufacturing here. (Record Matrix Electroforming- Plating, Vinyl Record Pressing.)

Anti slip serrations on 7" records

HI

I was wondering if anyone had any photos or more info on the molds that would have had gripper ridges on them. (The bumps around the outside of labels on 45s to stop them slipping on stackable record players)

Purely curious as I've never seen any stock footage or anything on them.

The "anti-slip ring" (or the so-called 'necklace') on 7" records during the heyday of record stackers was created by the stamper forming tool These ridges are therefore not on the record pressing mould - just the stampers. Once their used was phased out, you will see a raised ring around the outer part of the label. The ridges in the stamper would sit on this raised ring.

Aha! Very interesting! What stopped the ridges flattening out (or at least losing their definition) on the press?
Also wouldn't the cavity under the ridges cause pressing issues with an accumulation of dust?
Are there any pictures out there?

Ridges on Stampers
Quite easy, fill the back of the stamper with soft solder A bit of emery cloth to get the roughness out finer cloth to finish of Done about 10 minutes from memory
There was pressing tool as well but we rarely used it That was to actually press the ridges in the stamper,
We used a heated tool to press them into the lacquer than of course got them on the metal work....

Thanks Chris, the Polygram ones looks more a heated tool on the lacquer, I'm curious to see the tool or getting one instead of building it, which won't be hard anyway.

Very interesting post!

Always curious about how it's made and if there's any selling tool that could make it. A little bit related, still looking for any manufacturer that could provide us with a die/punch for making the "4-prong" center hole which also appear on the attached picture. Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

Take care my family!

from a DJ perspective this is the thing i hate the most on older 7". from now on when i order 7" i will explicitly ask to have them without anti-slip ring (just in case) :)

The post's here clearly state how it was made, either on the lacquer or on the finished stamper In so far as the punch out center is concerned, This was called the Mercury center, memory is not goof enough to remember why, Ha I thought it was only three! One used a "spider" insert if the center was punched out so they can be played on a standard 9/32" spindle or used a solid or hollow 1 1/4" round insert to fill the hole
Any way we can certainly make a tool that will do it either pneumatic, hydraulic, or a simple kick press for either serrations or punching out the Mercury center
cheers
