Who's Pressing These Records?

Once you have cut a master laquer, you have metal stampers created and have records pressed from them. Discuss manufacturing here. (Record Matrix Electroforming- Plating, Vinyl Record Pressing.)

Who's Pressing These Records?

A new series of bootleg vinyl LPs in limited editions of 500 copies. Two sources point to them being pressed in Russia in 2012, one source claims they were pressed in Sweden in 2011, another source claims Italy and another source points to England.

Can you use a smaller than usual label on an auto press without major modification? I'm thinking these records are made on manual presses by someone who doesnt have acces to a record jacket printer.

Bootlegs on Vinyl Impossible No one does that in our industry do they? I am shocked
In the last 6 months definitely not Italy
In England a remote possibility
The two guys nabbed some time back wouldn't dare
One is still waiting for his case to be heard the other got some kind of a penalty
Sweden??? There is a one or two press outfit there
No Idea who or where
Russia
Well there are two machines there in Moscow but they have been gathering dust for a while now
I think they are still looking for water and steam commutators besides the local supermarket stop selling nickel
Cheers

So, can an auto press use labels with a diameter of some 2" or less or are these made on a manual press?

It depends if the label arms have been modified as the vacuum suckers are a bit further out than say 2"
Its no big deal to make two new arms or even modify the existing ones so as to do it with suckers about the size as used in CD production
On the label magazine you can insert a piece of hard plasit cut out to be held by the existing edges but reducing the diameter to whatever is required
Of course its hard to tell from looking at the record if it was made by an auto or a manual press
There are some telling points though
As an example
If the edge has been trimmed with a radius on it it would be a strong indication that it was made in Italy and on a manual press
The trimmers used in Italy are quite a marvelous design with one knife trimming the flash and another coming in contact with the edge of the record subsequently so as to take off the sharp edge left leaving a nice smooth radius behind
If it is a sharp edge that would indicate an auto machine or a a manual machine with a trimmer of the Toolex style a single knife, no second cut
Another point to look for is the center bush indentation that is normally seen on any record
Most auto presses have a nut which hold the bush in place so it is held in the molds perfectly parallel
On manual presses it is held with a fork which never holds them perfectly parallel so you can detect a slight raise on one side of the record
Thats about all one can investigate by a physical inspection
In so far where these records where made?
This is any ones guess
Cheers
Chris
