sound quality of the pressed records
Hi, being a newbie in record pressing I would like to ask:
We have Pheenix Alpha presses and sound of our records is a bit upper-mids-heavy, and/or "louder", compared to testpresses made by our stampers supplier. It is nothing really bad (customer-approved ), but the records just seem to be like "run-through-aditional-compression" or having less space/breath or something like this in A/B listening tests.
Do you have any hint for healing this? Or at least where to start searching/changing parameters.
Thanks
Jan

Re: sound quality of the pressed records
You're saying that pressings made by your stamper supplier sound different to the pressings you make from the same stampers - is that right?
You are comparing these two different pressings on the same turntable, right?
As you know, you can't change the tonal quality of the record, add compression or turn up the volume at the pressing stage so this sounds odd, hence seeking clarification. It sounds like you might be making a better record.

Yes, from the same stampers and compared on the same turntable.
Is there a chance to influence the sound in any way by changing the parameters of the pressing process?

That's bizarre. I hope somebody has an answer for this.
Re: sound quality of the pressed records
It is measurable and sometimes also audible that lacquer / vinyl / pvc / copper master plate / nickel mother can have a little bit different sound on the same turntable+same stylus due to elasticity or rigidity of the particular material. But there should be no audible differencies when using various vinyl formulations. Maybe the nickel mother had been wrongly dehorned (polished) when your new stamper was made...

Are you maybe talking about playing the mothers?
Pressing from the same pair of stampers you could certainly get differences in surface noise and pressing artifacts, but not a difference in volume or EQ.
