Laquer Cutting Bonanza & Metal Work, Was it?
Well here we are in the game of getting a finished vinyl record out to the consumer, all the steps to make that possible have taken place so finally a record is out of the door from the pressing plant and on to the distributor the band the retail store or on line sales from wherever
My recent post on the state of the pressing side of things had a fairly good impact judging by the amount of views plus the participation of others here posting their views
What was not touched upon was the actual cut as well as the metal work required so as to complete the process
Since there has been a tripling or quad number of presses plus about 80 odd pressing plants in the last 6-7 years one has to ask where did all these titles produced got cut and the metal work made for them so as to satisfy the demand
Aha, here is the quandary, despite the fact that a great number of presses got manufactured and delivered no one has made a professional cutting lathe, none that I am aware of any way
Further we have not seen an increase in the number of cutting studios or cutting lathes being put into action If so it was kept quite as there was not much publicity unlike the opening of a pressing plant here there and everywhere
So is it the case that the cutting houses must have worked their existing equipment non stop, second or long shifts or putting lathes into service that may have been idle in storage or effectively not required previously due to the demand been satisfied with what they had already up and running
From our own perspective we had 2 people in the cutting room doing 2 shifts in some cases overlapping to keep up I am not sure if prices for a cut went up or stayed where they were we did not increase our prices
However I am curious to find out if that was the case elsewhere taking advantage of the high demand for the service
In so far as plating is concerned there has been a few entrants in the industry with some even increasing capacity so as to keep up with demand
Any one here can throw some light to the above?
What happened during that incredible increase in demand?
We know about pressing but it be nice to have some input on the cutting and plating side of the game
Best

well if it is not on social media it does'n mean it does not exist.no one has made a professional cutting lathe, none that I am aware of any way

dont know what your sources of infos are. but if your reality is this forum, IM , FB then this might be not enough.
just to get you an idea. in berlin end of 90ies there was one cutting room with one lathe. at the moment i count around 20 lathes in town.
some studios around the world use almost fully automated 3 shifts 24h/7.
which makes sense to make money with the equipment you have.
but it could be there are some (real ) pro lathes .
maybe the the ones who have are busy with cutting and the ones who build them, are busy building them.
but yes. no post. no render. no reality. or there is no publicity needed for this kind of stuff.
every new lathe needs someone who takes care of. its not a cd burner or a printer.
IMHO. not much more lathes are really needed . every year a few old ones still come back to life.
as long as we don't have a higher output of affordable lacquers and more reliable styli this makes absolutely no sense.
happy cutting

yes, there also some small manufactureres
arround, you can choose a lot of options.
I think, Flo still offers his AM44, there will
be waiting time.
Lot of stuff arround, not everything is made
for pro use...
Ask the experienced guys for further Infos
or do Testcuts

Re: Laquer Cutting Bonanza & Metal Work, Was it?
Thanks guys The old hands chipping in Great to see that! Just as I thought 24/7 and existing gear or not required previously being put into action
The Czechs were automated and 24/7 years ago That's the only automated cutting place I am aware, if there are others i am not aware of them
Social media and myself are not the best of friends but feedback from various sources involved in the game are, may be not enough in this instance
Lacquers and styli good point Lots of "threats" world wide but no action so far, I saw the semi finished proposed lacquer line in Italy Just prior to the pandemic It seems that the young blokes driving it are no longer there so nought come out of it so far, may be it does No idea as to any progress nothing to report there
Keep in cutting indeed

On Instagram they say that Sillitoe lathe get's installed here and there. I also saw a pressing plant using Souri's machine to cut the laquers.
