I put a piece of foldeed paper over the oiled track to keep dust from settling on it.

I'm setting up our lathe in a somewhat dusty (old industrial warehouse) area and am planning to cover it nightly with plastic, canvas or whatnot. My main concern is inadvertently damaging something on the record head if the needle catches on some fold on the cover.

You could probably use a cover sold for motorcycle storage.

Seems like about the right size. They usually have some elastic around the bottom which could help keep junk from blowing up and under also.

You can always take the cutterhead off at night if you are worried about snagging it on the cover.

taking the head off?
is that really necessary? sounds like a lot of work adjusting and stuff every day.

Well, he was concerned about it and offered an easy solution.

You are correct about it being extra work, I would not do it myself but if the conditions are dusty, it might be a good idea anyway.

I can't really see on a Neumann that process taking more than 10 minutes on any given day.

I use an uncoated 14" lacquer blank to cover the turntable. I asked Apollo for the aluminum blank.

I use an old Army band 16" transcription record that I got at a flea market. Covers the whole platter.

I use only the paper that we find in the lacquer box for covering the turntable of the vms 80.

Genius...

I do the same with a 16", I have about 20 of them, useless, except for this dust-cover technique, which, unfortunately, were stored improperly over the years, and 'curdled' as I call it. A separate box of 25 red- label 12" 's were in fine condition, though!
