Westrex 3DIIA on Neumann suspension box
Just need to ask if anyone has had experience with using a Westrex 3DIIA head on a suspension box?? my worry being the cutter lift button .. the spring isnt strong enough to lift the westrex... has anyone beefed up that spring before?? also is the advance ball on the head needed??
thanks
thanks

Hi Pandapolar,
Joe Malone told me about your setup and I saw pics on your facebook page. It looks great, congratulations!
Were you able to get the head far enough back so the stylus lines up with the spindle?
I can't tell if you've already achieved that or not from the pic...
Cheers
James

Inside the suspension box there is a spring as you well know.
If you look at it carefully you will see it has adjustment
The section that attaches the stud with the thread it has some holes
Thats where the nut to take up the weight goes where we adjust at the back
In this it has a section In which you can move the hook on the spring
Move it so as to balance the weight.
It should be no issue. Its been done before
It has nothing to do with the lever as when balanced it will not exert any more pressure than normal
At any rate the lever has its own lifting system
Best

Re: Westrex 3DIIA on Neumann suspension box
One of my Neumann lathes cane with a Westrex 3DII cutter-head so it is do-able. Follow the advice here and you will be good to go.
When this head is used with a Neumann lathe, the advance ball is unnecessary. Turn the knurled knob to raise it above the lacquer and leave it there.
The advance ball scuffs the lacquer but if set properly, the groove is cut into the scuff mark. If not set properly, you will see a scuff Mark in the land. Seeing as the Neumann suspension box will adjust the depth, you don't need the advance ball in this set up. Happy cutting. !!

Re: Westrex 3DIIA on Neumann suspension box
awesome thanks... what did you do to counter the issue with the head sitting too far forward?? we are think a bracket to move the suspension box back until the head lines up with the spindle..

Re: Westrex 3DIIA on Neumann suspension box
this is the setup so far
we are going to get a pitch13 from flo to counter the fixed pitch issue... so far so good

On The four bolts which hold the up and down slide on the neck one can have a 10 mm thick metal plate with a set of holes to take the sus box with couner sunk screws and another set of four to mount it further backpandapolar wrote:awesome thanks... what did you do to counter the issue with the head sitting too far forward?? we are think a bracket to move the suspension box back until the head lines up with the spindle..
This will work however if memory serves me well there was a standard stub for the Neumann, you replace the existing one. Maybe someone here has one
Place a wanted in the classifieds

Re: Westrex 3DIIA on Neumann suspension box
I received the lathe already set up for the Westrex head. I never noticed how it was done as I put it in the shed once I got the VMS62 which also went into the shed when I got the VMS70 so I never made a visual comparison. That lathe is in Korea now so not possible to check. I would think you could make a plate for the required offset and mount it between the overhead arm and the rack and pinion.
The Pitch 13 system sounds like a good idea. If you consider Doug Sax used this or a similar model you should be able to cut like a pro once the Pitch system is installed.

Re: Westrex 3DIIA on Neumann suspension box
Is the solenoid powerful enough to do depth control well?
Re: Westrex 3DIIA on Neumann suspension box
Since the weight is taken by the spring there is no more or less weight to deal with

No more weight is a static position. I am asking if it can be controlled dynamically by the solenoid.mossboss wrote:Since the weight is taken by the spring there is no more or less weight to deal with

Your lathe looks anazing, congratulations!
Can i ask you which model of neumann it is?

What kind of adapter is needed to mount westrex on neumann suspension box? Been thinking about 3d and 2b lately
Thanks

Male collet with correct angle...
Am sure some of the lads here could make you one.
Plenty of hobbyist and pro machinist hanging around.
