small diameter cuts (neumann/scully)
I was trying to wrap my head around how a pro lathe (Neumann/Scully) could cut super small discs on lacquer.
Going back to the time when dolls had "roulette" records that were 2-3" in diameter, with a few very short sayings.
up to today where Erica Records offers 5" records as a standard option, and down to 2" records as a custom job.
From what I've seen of the Neumann - the head could not clear the center spindle while cutting much farther in than the label area.
And even so the auto lead out would engage at that small of a diameter correct?
The Scully seems more modifiable as it's not always run by a pitch computer.
anyone have any insight?

Hi,
Check out US patent 4597700 for a later 1980's approach to the problem.

Basically you can modify any lathe to do anything, you just need to know how to do so...
I've once seen some weird Neumanns with adaptors and extra holes in the platter which I was told were for custom records.
With bigger cutting heads the center pin has to go, the rest is quite doable..
There are some videos by the Grand Masters (Aardvark, Flozki)

Wanted: ANYTHING ORTOFON related to cutting...thx
Re: small diameter cuts (neumann/scully)
All you need is a bracket to extend the suspension out fuether. Problem solved. Nothing else is required.

wow! That really is something.
Flo went with the custom setup, awesome.
The Aardvark video looks like a scully in which they removed the center pin, and then taped the lacquer to the platter.

Show us it's "problem solved" and you can make your lathe with an SX or your head clear the center post. I call total BS on this...opcode66 wrote:All you need is a bracket to extend the suspension out fuether. Problem solved. Nothing else is required.

No problem. Since this is not paid work or anything I personally want to do it has a very low priority. But, the work is now logger in my official schedule.
Essentially a block of wood cut to shape with a hole drilled through (about 4") and a slot routed perpendicular to ths hold, a longer bolt with mactching threading, some long cable ties to help relieve strain, and disconnection of the microswitch cable in the back of the lathe body. That is all. Any VMS owner can validate this approach. That is how it has already been done by others in the past. I would simply be making my own version of what has already come before. Cheers!
