I'm builind a record lathe cutter

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

I'm builind a record lathe cutter

Hi All, I decided to start making a record lathe by my own but I have some questions.
I'd like to build it on my old vinyl player. I have an Audio Technica LP-120 too, but I don't know if the pressure of the cutting could damage the player, so I prefer build it on an old one.

I decided to use Arduino for controlling the stepper motor speed. I use a 5 V stepper motor and I regulate it for 33 RPM and 45 RPM speed. This record player hasn't the 78 RPM speed... The motor is connected to a belt (Image 1) and the belt is connected to a linear axes.

Then I have some question about the cartridge. I'd like to make a cartridge like(or similar) to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptfIHqyOtHw.
I have found this stylus on eBay and the seller adviced me to buy the #2: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Record-lathe-cutter-presto-record-in-stylus-needle-styli-rek-o-kut-recorder/282085271275?hash=item41ad97a6eb:g:JF0AAOSwDN1UUHTk
Now the part that puts me in trouble: I don't know how can I build the "socket" where I'll put the stylus in (Image 2). There is the possibility to find one on the Internet? If not, how can I make this?

Have some other questions about the cartridge. Which kind of magnets should I use?
And the last one question. I don't understand who is the material of the case of the cartridge(RED doodle) and what are the 2 blocks(BLUE doodle) (3)

Hope someone can help me :D

Thanks

Hey, good luck with your project!
You have to choose the turntable with the highest possible torque, search forum for options, Is said that certain models from Technics and Stanton may work, but also sone very old turntables.

I think the backplate cn be made of alluminum, brass or other non magnetic metal. The blocks seem to be the magnets, linked with a bar at the top for closing the magnetic circuit.
About the armature, you may solder parts together or make it from an only block... the most important tool here is patience!

Here, some info,:

Thanks for your answer.
I still have question about the socket... I don't how to build it by my own... Is there the possibility to find it on the Internet?

Before I haven't said that I want to build a MONO cartridge and not a STEREO. I want to cut vinyl blank and not other kind of support

Do you know if the magnets must be low, medium or high magnetization? Can someone tell me the magnetization code(i.e. N48, N52, etc) ?

Thanks in advance

The stepper is used to pilot the cartridge. I already have a turntable :)

The socket you are talking about is called "armature" and I'll be surprised if you find it made anywhere. Only option is to make one yourself or ask a machinist to make one. For that you may need to know the exact dimensions... some trial and error is to be expected, it will take some time
About the magnets, if using neodimium they may be way shorter than alnico. Alnico and neo dont behave exactly the same, not only looking at the "strenght",thats another story.Threres an ideal relation area/lenght where a magnet work its best in a given magnetic circuit. This point is not very critical. I recommend to buy 6 n52 of 1cm x1cm , 1mm thick, and make two stacks of 3, for a start. Im guessing the dimensions.and jus hopping they will fit...

Thanks again for your answer! I will take 6 of them :)
I'm sorry for asking another question... This armature should be make of magnetic or not magnetic material?

Usually is mild steel, the most common used in household hardware...
I strongly reccomend you to read all you can about how a moving iron cuttter works and magnetism. The book in the link above is a good start... and search this forum for more.
