plastic plate embossing
ive been fuckin around with plates for a long minute and im finally happy with the result
this is embossed on my homemade machine(home made cutterhead) using jerry tate tungsten to emboss
what i did is use carpet tape to sandwich two plates together to make a double sided record blank
i think it sounds cray

Re: plastic plate embossing
thats some awesome results for embossing on plastic plates.
i have been using polycarbonate but i will have to try it out on the plates.
any tips or how to get it dialed in?
i figure you gotta angle it back?

Re: plastic plate embossing
yes its a bit back and zero heat im using a pa poweramp and a computer to do the processing (eq multiband compressor and limiting)
at first i thought the heat was the problem when i was embossing single plates and they would curl up but it made little difference, by sandwiching them together i can emboss the other side and if it curls a bit once the other side is cut it flattens it out.
also cut at 33 but slowed down to play back at 45 this gives higher fidelity

Re: plastic plate embossing
thanks for the reply. so i just tried embossing on the picnic plate and it sounded bad.
no matter what i tried ( adjusting angle, weight) i got bad results.
i am using a Presto K8 with the Tungsten shanks from Ebay.
i will stick to embossing on polycarbonate since i have my rig dialed in for that.

Re: plastic plate embossing
This is great fred! much better than my results with plates.
I sort of just dial it in so it tracks and deal with the noise from there, most clients for plates aren't cutting "music" per se, so they're not as picky about added surface noise.

making lathe cuts on a Presto 6N, HIFI stereo cuts on vinylrecorder

Re: plastic plate embossing
i generally cut on lexan and i get better results on that for sure but ive had great results on plastic plates the main problem has been warping of the plates after i emboss, as long as they stay flat i can play them i tried gluing cardstock to the matt side and it worked but i like the idea of having a two sided disc and so far this is working out as long as i dont cut with a super wide groove.
the main thing for me is cost and making a double sided plate costs me about 60 cents vs a 4 to 5 dollar peice of lexan makes sense to me
im also looking into black polycarb as thats what all my clients want(no matter what i tell them they still ask)
cheers

Re: plastic plate embossing
they are polycarb and i find they work ok with maybe slightly higher surface noise than a strait lexan blank
