Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Stylus Heating Ciruit

Hi, the transistor in my heating circuit failed today and i'm looking to repair and possibly improve.

Below is a schematic that was made with the help of AI. Its the same as i've currently got except replacing a 1ohm/10w with a 6,8ohm/10w resistor, and on/off in -5v power instead of +5v.

They also recommend adding a fuse.

Does anyone with stronger electrical engineering skills see any issues?

Seems ok, but I think you want the on-off switch on top top leg of the pot. As is, If you open the switch, the gate will get pulled to +5volts and turn on.

Hi Matt!

Hope you're doing good!

I don't see any advantage of dual supply - just extra parts and hassle... Or is AI magician making stupid things and draws -5V where is GND or 0V (?)
The 6,8 Ohm probably will be to high for 5V. The heating wire (typical 2..10 Ohms) and Drain-Sourve-Voltage are eating most voltage already.
As markrob said, if you want to turn off using the switch then you need to have the switch in the positive line.

What do you want to improve? More current?
Are you sure the transistor is dead? What happend?

Hi Lukas,

We're doing great, and the preamp is working wonderfully.

After turning on heat today i heard a quiet pop and it stopped working. Pin 1 to pin 3 on mosfet read 2ohm, which should be open?

I'm not sure it can be improved tbh, but while its down i thought i'd ask.

This is a schematic it spewed out with a revised resistance. 2ohm instead of 6,8..it added two resistors between the pot and mosfet.

Ai is an interesting tool to bounce ideas off and helpful to learn basic electrical concepts, but its confidently wrong very often and its artwork
