Acrylic and Sapphire cuts again.
Guys I just got a bunch of adamant styly and tried cutting acrylic sheets again.
1. sounds good but you have to cut deep enough:)
2. chip removal is ok (not as good as polycarbonate)
3. you can cut 2mm thick black & transparent sheet
4. styly is cheap and i don't cry when i break it.
Anyway has anyone experience in this.
How long did your stylus last for?
If i could cut 10 discs that's all what i want then i am happy.
Cheers

hmmm... interesting. I don't get it.. how cheap adamant stylii can be?
i have tried with used stylus. first it was ok as should be with used stylus.... until i braked it. I stopped the the experiments till i got more.
but considering price on adamant stylus I am not sure that they are cheap.

hmmm... for 10 disks one stylus for 75 euros (thats how much for EU buyers with shipping) is expensive I think. if calculating approximately 30 min per disk (for example) then 300 minutes would be stylus for 5 working hours.
well it is just a simple calculation to think of.
my thoughts are about diamond. cannot tell the results yet because of dead cutterhead. but will write here when I will have some figures to show.
tried only saphire and acrylic that was OK, but as said before I didn't try on new stylus so there is no final figures on working hours and the quality of recording to show.
can you give us sound sample of cutting on acryl with saphire?

yes i will post a track soon.
yeah i know what you are talking about BUT
If you cut with a diamond which is 220 euros or even more and you cut let's say 10 discs. I know a few people here who got about 10 discs out of a diamond inclusive me. i stopped believing in long cutting times with a diamond, maybe if you have a neumann it's better but..anyway.
so 10 discs 230 euros a stylus is 23 euros per disc.
10 discs 75 euros a sapphire is 7.5 euros per disc.
I can live with that but not breaking diamonds worth 500 euros a month:)
do you know what i mean.
cheers

i understand your point of view. but i have to try on myself the work hours on diamond. Have you try to cut acryl with diamond or you went straight to polycarbonate?
if saphire can cut acryl then diamond should do it better....
btw you have to know the cutting force. if you doing too much it would wear you stylus more quicker and i think you know that...

My buddy in Austin that I sold a 6n to months ago has been doing a lot of acrylic and sapphire cuts, getting good results and apparently getting a decent number of records out of them considering he only had 3 good styli to start and ordered his first replacement just recently.
I need to get back to trying acrylic.

ok here is the recording.
I cut on a 10 inch acrylic 2mm thick black with a normal sapphire from adamant.

Well, he was new at cutting, so probably made plenty of mistakes learning what he was doing, using styli that may or may not have been used, etc so I have no idea how many cuts he gets now that e knows what he is doing and using a new stylus.fraggle wrote:hey piapth
can you find out how many discs per styly roughly?
cheers mate
hey fraggle.
i decided to order saphire next week. will finish fixing the cutter soon and will do some cuts and will see how it will last for me. I have made 50 pcs of acryl 7" disks. So have a material to cut on... hehe
one more thing. got confused here. do i need to heat the stylus or disk with lamp. maybe without head will be good too?
