mono cutterhead modify

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Hello people, today I was thinking a interesting thing : is there someone that has tried to modify a normal mono cutterhead for transform in a stereo version insert a second coil above the first ?
In this way the channels are two but without the classic 45/45 structure...

That was actually how the first stereo heads were built, though they intended to record one lateral channel and one vertical channel. When I first discovered the concepts of cutting I toyed with this idea as well; feed summed mono to the lateral head and difference information to the vertical head, Mid/Side style. You would have to mechanically link the two heads to a central stylus - something akin to the Westrex model, but tilted 45 degrees of course. Problems arise when you consider that all the weight would rest on the vertical-modulating head, instead of on both driving coils equally.

I am thinking to rebuild a unique very little container divided in two parts by a plastic material for example.
In one space could be a coil from 8 ohm, the same in the other; but the important thing is that this container must have the same height of original, so all magnetism should remain below two horseshoe magnets without air gaps, but this is a theory to confirm with experiments...

For understand better the structure of my head, here there is a photo from Flo website : http://www.floka.com/pics/m2clement04.jpg

The coil is red colour

Transforming a mono cutterhead into a stereo one? Not likely, the mechanisms are completely different. I suppose you can convert a canoe into an airplane too, but it might be easier to start from scratch.

I'd have to agree with audadvnc

It might be easier to start from scratch...

If you have a good dig around here on trolls - you will find plenty of photos of members home made stereo heads

I've been looking into building a stereo head and from what i've seen - it would not be too complicated or expensive

To build a budget stereo head based on similar designs here on trolls can cost you as little as $50 to build, but lets face it What sort of build & sound quality could you really expect to get from $50

If you were to consider building a stereo head based on what others have done - I would reccomend taking your time & putting a little extra into your materials ie: High quality speaker coils, machined aluminium frame/housing, cones etc

Not only will you have a custom stereo head that looks good, It should be of a decent sound quality too...
