1971 Mattel INSTANT REPLAY Record Player

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

I thought this thing was interesting

I wonder how hard it would be to make discs like this and even the playback machine?

Seems a fun thing, wish it wasn't soooo much, else I'd buy it and find out XD

Weird that it's all sports guys, and that the records have no holes.

My guess is that the records have no holes because they don't spin. The stylus does. Much like the Baseball Talk sports cards that came out in the mid 80s. I've got one of those on my "short lived vinyl based toys" curio shelf. I just bought one of these Mattel jobbies to sit next to it. Thanks for the heads up that they exist.

innnteresting. i wonder what the advantage would be?

It's possible that the records DO spin using an idler wheel. If you had a couple other wheels triangulating, you wouldn't need a hole. I guess either could work, and it would be a matter of spinning the lighter piece to save battery power.

Actually this is the same as the Mattel Alphabet Phone:

http://images.worthpoint.com/files/pb/1115/3943/160.jpg

and the Mattel Talking Football

http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/Mattel-MondayNightFootball.jpg

and they had one for a space rocket and one for a Boing (sic) aircraft...

The discs did in fact spin as they had a mini version of the exact same mechanism inside as a Mattel-O-Phone. The disc retainer which actually went THROUGH the disc in a Mattel-O-Phone to rest in a dent on the ``turntable'' below (belt drive if you can believe that) rests instead inside the dent of the Instant Replay etc records - serving the same purpose.
