SP10MKII Lathe
The saw base (that houses the linear bearings) is mounted within the plinth and has thick felt on top of it. The TT is mounted on top of it via M5 threaded rods running the depth of the plinth, sandwiching the saw base and bearings very solidly and making it all perfectly square and level.
It is just a pwm controlled brushless dc motor turning a ball screw, I need to make a plate marked with LPI to be mounted behind the pointer knob.
The suspension box has an air dashpot a spring and a hard drive bearing.
I've been cutting with a homemade head but I don't yet have an amp with enough power, I'm planning on using Hypex Ncore 400 modules and Caruso.
I'm making another one of these with plans to use Ableton Max for Live, Maxuino and an Arduino as a pitch controller.
I've also made another lathe with an overhead similar to the T560, I'll post more here soon.
Cheers
James

Great work James..very jealous...hahahaha...

Nice!
How does the SP10 perform in terms of running torque?
any pitch variation on playback?

Re: SP10MKII Lathe
Thanks guys!
I can't detect any pitch variation on playback via SL1200MKII , it seems very stable.
I made my experimental heads to weigh roughly the same as the 285gram aluminium Caruso.
So far I've been cutting with the steel triangles from Jerry both with and without heating lamps, I've played a bit with different head angles- the cuts don't sound great but the TT speed seems good.
I ordered my Caruso yesterday and I'm eager to see how the system performs with it!

Re: SP10MKII Lathe
If I recall correctly, they are 15 kg-cm for torque. That is quite a lot!

That's the MKIII you're thinking of, the MKIIs are a mere 6kg-cm...

I was reading MKIII for some reason.... Need to get my eyes checked.
Regardless, that is still 3 times more torque than a modified technics 1200

wow, excellent! Glad to hear it works for you, I'll be on the lookout for one of those to upgrade my VR setup.

Re: SP10MKII Lathe
The plinth and mechanics are from a huge NUR Tempo II billboard printer.
I was recently given a rare opportunity to scrap two massive printers for parts and this lathe just sort of came together, I have only needed to drill a few holes so far!
The pitch motor is in the mail and I need to build a suspension box.

Re: SP10MKII Lathe
Here is a quick and dirty proof of concept for my pitch controller.
Track volume automating midi to control pulse width modulation for pitch motor.
Ableton- Max for Live- Maxuino-USB serial port- Arduino- electronic speed control- bldc motor...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c9aZbduexs&feature=youtu.be
This motor is a Maxon EC-Max with a reduction gear head.
You can still cut from PT and run Ableton via re-wire for preview.
Here's some tutorial videos- http://www.maxuino.org/video
Cheers.

that's pretty dang cool..
Re: SP10MKII Lathe
Nice work love the design on both lathes

This quick video is to show the pitch motor being controlled by midi clip envelopes.
I still need to sort out many aspects of this pitch controller.
At the moment I have to draw in the automation envelopes by hand.
I need to think of how to plot the clip envelopes in real time while accounting for volume, frequency, tt speed, running time etc etc etc.
Shouldn't be too hard... haha.
Mechanics.

Re: SP10MKII Lathe
I've just been successful in making the Maxuino midi clip follow the volume information from an audio clip in real time.
This means that the pulse width modulation going to the motor is driven directly by the changes in audio volume.
Great! It was easier than I thought it was going to be
I will post a video tomorrow night showing this but I still need to add all of the other parameters to make it work in a usable way.
But it will work!
I think this will eventually be a pretty creative tool to cut records like Lazaretto because you can draw in the pwm signals with the pencil tool too.
Still a long long way to go though.

Re: SP10MKII Lathe
Thanks guys, it means alot!
Here's a vid of volume driving the motor. Look at slider 9 in the maxuino patch at the bottom left of screen.
I'll show you how I achieved this sometime... I'm still figuring out how to implement the other factors properly.
This system will allow multiple lathes to run automatically from one arduino board.
Arduino Uno should be able to run 6 via pwm although I'm actually using servo mode in these tests.
I was going to use test tones for this demonstration but I noticed the serious lack of music from the Himalayas in this forum, specifically music from the Manipur Hills!

Re: SP10MKII Lathe
The second channel of audio isn't present in that previous video, it had the sound from the motor- something went wrong in the upload- just keep an eye on the pulleys and slider number 9.
Cheers.
