Vacuum Platter - How it works

Hi all,

New to the forum and with a genuine interest in engineering outside of audio.

I've been looking into building a hobby lathe and would like to build my own vacuum platter. After looking at some vacuum platter pictures I can see there are varying designs. Of the ones I've seen there are split platters bolted/screwed together with grooves and holes drilled and a neoprene seal. However I have seen solid platters with grooves on the top - Do these work by the record sitting on the surface and creating a self seal to vacuum down?
