Gelatine coatings: wartime recipe

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Gelatine coatings: wartime recipe

Hi Trolls - May be of interest:

I came across a 'recipe' for coating recording blanks in an ancient issue of "Wireless World" (September 1941). The WW catalogue has been digitised and the relevant issue can be found here- head to the letter on page 242, "Re-coating recording blanks". It was referenced in Donald Aldous' "Manual of Direct Disc Recording" from 1943.

The ingredients are gelatine, sulphonated castor oil and glycerine, and a blank disc to be coated. All seem readily available, and quite inexpensive; and the technique looks straightforward, even if (according to the writer) it does require a bit of practice to get right.

Have any Trolls used this recipe? And did it work?

David

Thanks for posting that! I'll have to give that a try sometime.
