Lathe Trolls' 10th anniversary is Wed, June 24th
Dear Lathe Trolls,
Here's a little heads up that this site turns 10 years old on Wednesday, June 24th.
I never could have predicted, when I started this site, that it would have turned into such a thriving, international online community, filled with both top industry professionals and the newest newbies to the idea of making records. I could not have predicted that old-fashioned disc-making would find such a revival, and that this site would help to enable its participants to further that revival. I could not have predicted the recent rise of so much home-brewed innovation by our members, to help take up the slack left by the disintegration and disappearance of old equipment. I could not have predicted a year, like this last one, with roughly 800,000 page views. (We can safely say that a half-million were valid page visits).
Really, back then, I just wanted to get a few questions answered about an antique 78 rpm Wilcox Gay Recordio; and I wanted to celebrate a few people who were doing strange art projects with old Presto machines; like Twig Harper, who had coined the term "Secret Society of Lathe Trolls" jokingly in an earlier interview, here: http://www.kempa.com/more-vinyl-manufacturing-minutiae/
So, I'm very thankful for how this has gone. It has required a lot of administrative, programming, mediation and maintenance work from me over the years, and it continues to. Last year, and the year before, I performed major overhauls to keep up with changing software platforms. The site is actually due for another round of this, to better integrate it with blog technologies, the means of which have apparently improved dramatically.
But it is your enthusiasm, smarts, creativity, knowledge and experience, and willingness to share all of these things, that have made the site evolve, and have made it worth visiting and being a part of. The site is yours; the site is all of ours. Thank you all so very much.
A special shout out to our moderators: mossboss, Aussie0zborn, blacknwhite, Simon, and piaptk. They have helped keep the peace and restored order when things have gotten too wacky and disrespectful. Thanks as well to the many unofficial peacekeepers who have kept the tone good.
A very special shout-out to all who have contributed financially over the years (often by clicking that yellow "Contribute" button, above), as well as our recent advertising sponsors. I've said it before, and I'll say it again; you have, in a very real way, allowed the site to continue to exist, thrive, and get ever better.
I have nothing special planned as of yet. My mind is a blank. I invite suggestions, in this thread or in private messages.
Here is the site's first-ever post:

Yes - good job, Steve, and thanks for creating a wońderful forum!
I think I first visited this place in 2008 or 2009, although I registered later. I was interested in getting a lathe, but I always talked myself out of it. But I couldn't keep out, and now I have several hundred KG's of American made steel and aluminium in my mastering room!

By all means 'Happy Birthday'. I have enjoyed the many posts since 2006, and have even replied to a few.
