EDISON AMBEROLA V / FIRST INTERNAL HORN CYLINDER PHONOGRAPH
just picked this up and thought it might be of interest. a rare machine, not found very often and rarely in working condition. this was the first table top cylinder phonograph with an internal horn. known as the EDISON AMBEROLA. the "ola" suffix on any machine means it is self contained, with no external horn.
i found this at an estate sale covered in decades of grime, did a bit of adjusting and lubrication and the machine came to life again. this is circa 1913, only a few thousand of these machines were built before the devastating 1914 fire that destroyed the Edison phonograph works. the serial number of this machine is 2202, one of the last ones produced before the fire.
the machine is a four minute only cylinder phonograph and has a large flywheel under the front gear cover to improve the speed stability, the machine featured an auto brake to stop the machine at the end of the cylinder recording.
a rare Edison cylinder phonograph, not something i expected to find..

thomas edison / message to the american people / 1918
this is one of only five known cylinder recordings of Thomas Edison speaking. Edison is introduced by Harvey Firestone, founder of Firestone tire and rubber company. recorded on an original brown wax recording blank, circa 1900...

That's is really cool.two questions,I notice this cylinder is a different color than the dark ones you've been playing,is that a new wax cylinder?and I was wondering the pitch the wax cylinder plays at?lpi?

this is an original Edison brown wax cylinder circa 1903. it was cracked so i shortened it to prevent it from continuing to fracture. i just received a group of original brown wax blanks covered in mold, i shave these and transfer original recordings back to them.
the Edison machine has two speeds, two minute and four minute, the difference is the number of lpi, the two minute cylinder has 100 lpi, the four minute has 200 lpi, both run at 160 rpm. to play a four minute cylinder you simply slow the speed of the feed screw 50 % and change to a smaller stylus.
the 2 minute recorder uses a sapphire cupped point rod. .042 " in diameter, with a corresponding playback stylus called the model c reproducer. the four minute recorder uses a stylus. 021" half the size, and you use an h reproducer. a simple acoustic process that works amazingly well and is powered by sound waves and springs. a true talking machine.

SHAVING AN ORIGINAL 1900 EDISON BROWN WAX CYLINDER
a short demo of what it takes to reclaim an original cylinder. this is the for the Korean project... this becomes somewhat hypnotic when you are doing it, it not only flashes but it produces a rainbow of colors as the blade exposes different layers of mold.

THE DR. PEPPER THEME / HANCOCK'S JAZZ BAND
a special recording by Hancock"s Jazz Band, a jazz version of the Dr. pepper theme song...
this is a test recording for a new napkin ring cylinder we are producing. the napkin ring cylinder is approximately one minute of recording time, it was invented by Columbia for the 1904 worlds fair. booths were set up for people to record their voice on a free souvenir cylinder. the napkin ring cylinder is virtually never encountered intact or in playable condition. we replicate these early cylinders by trimming original cylinders that have been cracked, pitted or damaged.
this is an initial test recording on an old black wax dictation cylinder that has been modified for use on the cylinder phonograph.

LATIN GRAMMY ASSOCIATION / ANALIA REGO SUBMISSION
looks like we have finalized the song we are using for the Latin Grammy association. we are submitting this in the historic category. the first classical cylinder release in over 100 years. we are hopeful we will be nominated in the historic category, this has not been done in a very long time. submissions can only be made from a registered (MEANING TAXED) and incorporated record company. CANAPHONIC RECORDS is registered and incorporated in Nevada.
this is a historic Argentine song 25 de mayo, a special recording made just for transfer to the cylinder. this is the first test recording of the new audio file. analia recorded this herself without reverb or eq, a straight recording of her playing an acoustic guitar. this was recorded in her living room...

Re: CUSTOM CYLINDER RECORDING / ACKER BILK / ONLY YOU
A man after my own heart (just kidding).
Every year for the students in my junior college History of Recording Arts and Sciences class I cut out-of-period music onto an Edison cylinder and scramble it in among a bunch of other cylinders to see if the first-semester boys can tell which is the period-incorrect song or period-incorrect recording.
For the first few years I was doing things like Mantovani's Charmaine and Leroy Anderson's Typewriter Song or Syncopated Clock. They kept guessing it right so i went on with Acker Bilk's Stranger on the Shore and Percy Faith's Hawaiian Lullaby. About half the boys got the Acker Bilk right - but NOBODY got the Percy Faith right.
The next year I played a little dirty pool. I'd learned Meredith Willson's The Music Man was gonna play in the revival houses for it's 50th Anniversary, so I dragged all the boys to see it. They thought they were gonna be bored - til ``this guy started rappin' `bout how much trouble his city was gonna be in'' (student telling one of his friends on the phone in the lobby during intermission).
Then the boys were bored again til the Ice Cream segment - and I could hear `em trying to sing along without being noticed - cuz I heard a VERY brief and SEVERELY muted male chord behind me once or twice.
So they're listening to The Buffalo Bills sing their various numbers and as we're riding back to campus squashed into my van, wondered aloud whether or not there was any ``original recordings'' (my quotes) from the original years depicted in the film.
So little light went on and a couple weeks later I found some old test acetates and other kinds of reference discs containing outtakes from the Buffalo Bills in their Music Man sessions - and recorded a couple to cylinder.
Since it was outtakes and not the takes used in the film or Broadway cast album, It Fooled Everybody. Including the department chair who was a RABID barbershop quartet, cylinder and male chorus aficionado. About Which He was Not Happy
Until the side effects of dragging all the boys to see the film became known that is: an increase in male choir participation downstairs from the music recording studios - and an all-of-a-sudden lack-of-a-problem getting boys to try out for the School Musical - No No Nanette that year.
So the kids are bopping along to all manner of schmaltz like As Time Goes By and Tea for Two and Stormy Weather.
Long story short the musical had the biggest attendance in twenty years, the Boys Choir came in second and the Barbershop Quartet won the Regionals the following May.
And all of a sudden there was a shortage of cylinders and gramophones - and the records therefor - in the various junior-college parking lot swapmeets in Northern California.

THOMAS EDISON / UNRELEASED CYLINDER RECORDING
the only known private cylinder recording Edison made. recorded in the laboratory, Edison is speaking to his chief recording engineer Walter Miller. this cylinder recording was never released in Edison's lifetime, and is the only known recording of Edison telling a humorous story, and the only acoustic cylinder recording Edison made simply for fun.

1933 NAZI GERMANY RADIO TRANSCRIPTION DISC
this is the disc transferred to a brown wax cylinder. recorded in 1933 the year ADOLF HITLER became chancellor. this is DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES. and THE HORST WESSEL SONG, THE MARCHING SONG OF THE STURM ABTEILUNG (SA) the military branch of the national socialist German workers party.
the HORST WESSEL song is very rarely heard, this was a transcription disc played on German radio, very probably for the event of Hitler becoming chancellor. the names of the performers has been lost to time, but it is postulated that this is the S.A. band itself, if so this is a historic and significant recording.

ANALIA REGO / PRODUCTION CYLINDER TEST
this is the first " production " cylinder. recorded on an original Edison black wax recording blank. i just sent a copy to analia in buenos aires, Argentina. once she approves the recording we can begin making making copies and issue the press release. this is being submitted to the Latin Grammy association for consideration in the historic category. the first classical two minute cylinder release in over a century.
the submission must be from a registered record company and must be available for sale to the public. the Grammy association consider not only the performance but the quality of the recording as well. they also look at the packaging. in this case we will use a label that is reminiscent of an original cylinder label from the turn of the century. this is a very special recording in Argentina :
The May Revolution (Spanish: Revolución de Mayo) was a week-long series of events that took place from May 18 to 25, 1810, in Buenos Aires, capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. This Spanish colony included roughly the territories of present-day Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. The result was the removal of Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros and the establishment of a local government, the Primera Junta (First Junta), on May 25.
this was a difficult cylinder to record, not only is the machine fully acoustic, it is also driven by a spring motor. the machine uses a three weight centrifugal governor for speed stability. with the long pure notes of the guitar speed is critical, any fluctuation in speed results in a pitch change in the notes. i had to clean, lube, and carefully adjsut the machine in order to achieve reasonable stability for this recording. any standard music recording is not as critical as this recording, guitar and piano are the most difficult instruments to record on any cylinder phonograph. larger machines have much larger springs and resulting torque. this machine is quite small but makes very high quality recordings, but it must be tuned, lubed and well adjusted to make a quality recording, in this case an mp3 audio file transfer to a black wax cylinder. we are hopeful this is going to be accepted for consideration. a nomination guarantees the Grammy medal, the Latin Grammy awards are held in L.A, California.
