ANALIA REGO / PABLO-TANGO / MP3 TRANSFER

[ADMIN NOTE: I've consolidated a whole lot of Victrola Guy threads into one thread here. The downside is that we lose the actual view count of these items....It's MUCH higher than what we see in the index. Great stuff! --Steve E. ]

continuing my experiments with recording on the Edison cylinder phonograph, i think this compares favorably to a rek-o-kut disc recording. this is an mp3 transfer from a you tube video...

HISTORIC CYLINDER RELEASE

Post: # 29182Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY

i am working with ANALIA REGO, one of the foremost classical guitar players in the world. we are releasing the first classical cylinder recording in over 100 years. Analia is based in bueneos Aries Argentina, and performs worldwide, her specialty is the history of the tango. this is a test recording on an old black wax recording blank, i use these old cylinders for all of my test recordings. we are currently working on which songs to use for the transfer.

i have reduced the speed of the phonograph to 110 rpm, this allows a two minute cylinder to run up to four full minutes. this is a direct mp3 transfer to a 1910 Columbia black wax cylinder. far from perfect but considering this is an acoustic phonograph driven by a spring motor the results are actually quite gratifying, this sounds as good as many disc recordings i have heard recorded with a home record lathe on plastic discs.

PUSSYCAT RAG / EDISON CYLINDER RECORDING

audio from a you tube video transferred to a black wax Columbia recording blank. recorded on an original 1903 Edison standard B cylinder phonograph and playing through the archivette. A TOE TAPPER !!!

for anyone who is interested in recording this is a very inexpensive way to learn all of the basics of recording, the principals are the same for either a disc or cylinder. the cylinder format is of course vertical, but one encounters exactly the same problems. attempting to make a lo-fi recording on a disc is challenging, try it on a cylinder using a spring powered " lathe" and a purely acoustic recording process. its not a disc but it is a lot of fun at a fraction of the cost.

basic mechanics of the edison cylinder phonograph

Post: # 29211Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY
Mon Mar 10, 2014 3:08 am

i shot a video from above so you can see the layout of the cylinder phonograph. the feed screw is on the rear of the machine. the halfnut is on a lever attached to the carriage, lowering the carriage engages the halfnut to drive the carriage in either record or play mode.

the end gate is also the end bearing, the mandrel is belt driven by a spring motor mounted on springs below the bed plate. the mandrel drives the intermediate gear which drives the feed screw. the recording and playback are completely mechanical. the recorder has a sapphire stylus glued directly to a diaphragm and is completely acoustic. the reproducer is a sapphire "doorknob " riding the vertical cut grooves. the two minute cylinder phonograph uses 100 lpi, and normally runs at 160 rpm. the four minute cylinder phonograph also runs at 160 rpm but utilizes 200 lpi. a completely acoustic process, a true talking machine.

cat stevens / custom black wax cylinder / morning glory horn

Post: # 29222Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY

i usually post these recordings playing through the archivette, this one is playing through an original tea tray company morning glory horn circa 1906. this is indicative of the kind of acoustic recordings you can make on the cylinder phonograph. the playback is also purely acoustic with the sound waves being generated by a diaphragm connected to the stylus. this is a vertical cut format, simple and effective, it is also linear, so there is no compensation needed for a continuously contracting spiral on a disc recording. this is the original record lathe.

$$$ MAKING HIGH QUALITY EDISON CYLINDER COPIES $$$

Post: # 29231Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY
Tue Mar 11, 2014 9:42 pm

this is the basis of our company CANAPHONIC RECORDS, we make high quality cylinder copies of cylinders that are rare or too expensive to own. you will never find an original copy of this cylinder anywhere in this condition.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME !!!

everyone knows the chorus, but few have ever heard the original song, this is the original cylinder recording transferred to an original black wax recording blank. we scour the world, ( literally !!!) looking for original wax cylinders that have been destroyed by mold, shave them as quiet as possible and rerecord them to make copies of rare original cylinders. we work with museums and archives around the world including the library of congress, Korean national museum, National archive of Australia. this is known as archeophony, and allows virtually anyone to own a copy of even the most rare and expensive cylinders. we make custom cylinders for collectors and museums world wide. we are currently copying 12 1897 Korean wax cylinder field recordings housed in the library of congress.

this cylinder retails for $ 100.00

A HISTORIC CYLINDER RELEASE / THE IMMORTAL TINY TIM !!!
" MY OLD TOMATO CAN "

working with ship to shore media and street of dreams ltd. in Australia, we have released the first new cylinder recording by an international recording artist in over 100 years.

TINY TIM !!!

this is a short run of only ten cylinders recorded on brown wax recording blanks. several months ago we released fifty copies on black wax which immediately sold out. there are no remaining copies available. with special permission from the copyright holder we have arranged to produce ten brown wax copies of the now famous TINY TIM cylinder, " MY OLD TOMATO CAN ". these are the final run of this historic release and there will be no more produced.

of special interest to collectors world wide the original run of fifty cylinders sold out immediately and were shipped to collectors around the world. the brown wax copies are recorded on original Stentor brown wax recording blanks and numbered 1 through 10. each cylinder tube has the unique tiny tim cylinder label and all ten copies are signed for authenticity. this cylinder will never be recorded again, there will be ten copies produced from the master audio file which was recorded in Australia in the early 1970s.

we are proud and excited to have been chosen to produce this limited run of this very unique cylinder recording. THE FIRST TINY TIM CYLINDER IN HISTORY. we only wish tiny himself were alive to autograph each cylinder tube. it was tiny tim's life long wish to record an Edison wax cylinder.

the cylinder recording is quite loud and plays end to end with no issues of any kind. the cylinder is wrapped in cotton batting and shipped in a new made cylinder tube with label. each tube is numbered and signed by THEVICTROLAGUY guaranteeing its authenticity.

96 YEAR OLD DISC RECORDING TRANFERRED TO CYLINDER

Post: # 29271Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY
Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:55 pm

the original dixieland jazz band playing CLARINET MARMALADE, this was transferred to a stentor brown wax cylinder. this goes on ebay tonight, lots of interest in these old recordings. i clean up the audio and do the transfer, this sounds more like an early disc machine than it does a cylinder phonograph. these recordings are in demand, this is the only cylinder recording of this song in the world, fortunately we are not constrained by copyright on these old recordings...

NEW TEST TRANSFER TO A BLACK WAX RECORDING BLANK 160 RPM

Post: # 29287Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY
Sun Mar 16, 2014 12:59 am

another in the series of test recordings, this is from ANALIA REGO in ARGENTINA. still looking for the correct song as well as testing different parameters for doing the transfer to the cylinder. this is quite loud for an acoustic recording and is playing through an acoustic reproducer, a simple mica diaphragm with a sapphire "doorknob" stylus. the finished cylinder will be submitted to the Grammy association for consideration in the historic or special category. this will be the first classical recording released on an Edison cylinder in 114 years. this is a full screen link to the you tube video...

CUSTOM CYLINDER / BENNY GOODMAN / TEST RECORDING

Post: # 29350Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY
Fri Mar 21, 2014 2:01 am

this is a black wax set up cylinder. i always record a test before making the actual cylinder recording, sometimes several. this allows me to adjust volume, tone, etc. and hear the cylinder recording through the archivette as well as a horn. for testing i use damaged or noisy cylinder blanks. this is an original Edison dictation cylinder that has been modified for use on the cylinder phonograph.

thanks for posting this. there is a lot of interest in these old recordings, i am betting a modern hit of the week record would sell, someone should crank out a few disc recordings of these old songs and see how they sell on ebay. there is no copyright on early acoustic recordings and no physical way to own them unless you have a cylinder player. a modern disc version playable on a record player would be of interest i am betting...
