TEST OF THE DISC TO MP3 TRANSFER MACHINE

Post: # 27488Unread post THEVICTROLAGUY

i have been looking for an inexpensive efficient way to transfer disc recordings to mp3 audio files. i picked up an old califone institutional record player and made a simple interface to my audio input on my computer. i am using audio recorder for free, it is easy to use, works really well for this kind of recording and really is free. this is a direct transfer from the disc to an audio file. there is still a bit of 60hz buzz in the background, this is a $ 35.00 machine that is forty plus years old. a bit of fine tuning and i will have a really easy way to transfer any disc recording to an audio file. the audio file is actually quite good considering what i am using for the transfer.

with this audio recorder i can record both video with audio and make a separate mp3 recording at the same time, the mp3 is actually better than the audio coming through the webcam software. this is really easy to do, any standard record player can be easily connected to your computer if you have the right recording software.

ARCHIVING VINYL AS AN MP3 / DISC READER FOR THE BLIND

for the last week or so i have been working on this project, an inexpensive efficient way to record vinyl to the computer using a standard record player. in this case it is a library of congress reader for the blind. it will play 8, 16, and 33 rpm records. it has a quite nice amplifier and is electrically noise free. it has a bit of mechanical noise but works quite well and sounds quite good.

the point of this is that with a little work ANY RECORD PLAYER CAN BE USED TO MAKE HIGH QUALITY MP3 AUDIO FILES ON ANY COMPUTER. all it takes is an audio cable and the correct recording software. in this case i am using audio recorder for free, it is as simple to use as a tape recorder with record, pause stop. pretty basic but makes great audio files for those who want a really simple way to record the disc to an audio file without having to learn how to to do it. with this it is really one click and you have a nice mp3 audio file which actually sounds better than the audio you are hearing through the webcam software.

hope this is of some value to someone, any reasonably good working record player can be used, the poor mans way to archive your vinyl discs with really decent results. the headphone jack is plugged directly into the mic in on my computer using a simple cable, 1/4" mono to 1/8" stereo with both centers tied together, this gives you audio from both speakers even though the source is mono. if you have a stereo record player that works you can do the same thing with great stereo results. the audio you are hearing is going through my webcam software but i am using audio recorder for free as the audio source. the mp3 files sound better than what you are hearing.

ORSON WELLES / 1938 BROADCAST / WAR OF THE WORLDS

i looked on line but could not find a video of the disc recording of the radio broadcast playing in real time. Halloween marks the 75th anniversary of this historic radio broadcast so i thought i would use this for the first real disc transfer using the califone electric phonograph playing into the computer. this is working quite well and cost almost nothing, any working electric phonograph can be used to make direct mp3 audio files to your computer as long as you have the correct software. this is the link to the internet archive video of the complete disc recording.

ARCHIVING 78 DISC RECORDINGS WITH THE ARCHIVETTE PRO

a simple and efficient way to archive discs an mp3 audio files without losing the sound of the acoustic phonograph. the archivette pro attaches directly to the victor tonearm bypassing the horn, this allows all of the sound waves to be transferred directly to the archivette, and thus to the computer or digital recorder. the results are quite impressive. this does not sound like a talking machine, but is playing with a common steel phonograph needle directly into the rear blue in on my computer. i sell these on ebay...

a very small portable wind up acoustic phonograph circa 1926. i have fitted the tonearm with an archivette so i can use it for archiving disc recordings. it is small light and actually sounds quite good considering this is an acoustic phonograph. didnt know if anything like this would be of interest, but these early cylinder and disc phonographs is where it all started from.
