The Vinyl Recorder - mastering?
Here is something which has always confused me.
So the Vinyl Recorder, neat thing, heard some nice dubplate cuts off it, but there are references on the site to mastering..
But you can't cut a lacquer with this thing right? so how you can you cut a master disc?

Re: The Vinyl Recorder - mastering?
the reason you can't cut a master disc is the 1200 turntable that it's meant to be used with, can't accommodate a 14" master.
If you were to change out the diamond stylus with a sapphire, there is no reason you couldn't make 12" dubplates on lacquers, or 7" and 10" master cuts.
Though the 1200 is not nearly as steadfast as even a 6N turntable for cutting.
I would beware also that the souri site seems to be auto-translated. The site uses the word "vinyl" a lot as well, but it's just a simplification really. The souri discs are not vinyl at all. Just my thoughts.

Careful. It seems that some of the Souri torque tubes have the coned hole cut too deeply. They don't always fit a standard sapphire.

^^^ true.
I haven't tried a sapphire in my VR, but Opcode's right in saying you should use caution if you do try it.

What are they made from then, if you know?
Have you tried cutting on Souri's machine using discs made from other materials than the discs he sells?

I do not know, but they are closer to polycarbonate than a regular PVC pressed record.RdF wrote:tragwag wrote:The souri discs are not vinyl at all.

I have not tried with any other materials, as others have broken their stylus that way, do a search of the forum you'll find what I mean.

I was hoping I could pick your brain regarding your above post, specifically where you say "the reason you can't cut a master disc is the 1200 turntable that it's meant to be used with, can't accommodate a 14" master.". Can you expand on this please? Do you mean because the 14" material won't fit on the turntable, or ore there other physical torque issues? If one modified the on/off switch to accommodate 14" material, are there any additional issues you can see preventing this or causing issues at all? If so, what issues would the be and how would they manifest themselves?
Thanks!
