Neumann AM31a / VG1 Restoration Project – Looking for Advice and Ideas

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased what I believe will become a very interesting restoration project: a Neumann AM31a lathe together with a complete tube-based VG1 rack, SA74 suspension unit, and several Ortofon cutterheads, including two DSS661.

In many ways, this feels like a classic "barn find". The system had been sitting unused for many years, but appears to be remarkably complete.

I've now started the restoration process and am currently cleaning, polishing and inspecting each component one by one. As expected, there will likely be a fair amount of work ahead, including replacing capacitors, ageing components and bringing the electronics back into reliable operating condition.

Fortunately, the previous owner supplied a large collection of documentation, schematics, manuals and wiring diagrams. Having access to the original documentation should make the process of restoring and reconnecting the system much easier.

My goal is to restore the system while making a few carefully chosen upgrades. One of the main upgrades I'm considering is adding a FlokaSon Pitch18 pitch/depth control system. Longer term, I may also move towards transistor-based cutter amplifiers and some better heads, but for now the focus is on getting the original VG1 system restored and understood.

I think the combination of a Neumann lathe, VG1 rack, SA74 suspension, Ortofon DSS661 and eventually a Pitch18 could make for a very capable cutting system.
The Ortofon heads are going to ETEC in Denmark for a health checkup.

Any tips, ideas, documentation, experiences, warnings, or advice are more than welcome. I'm here to learn, and I know there's a lot of knowledge in this community.

I've also started documenting the restoration process on Instagram if anyone is interested in following along:

This is a beautiful set of recording machinery!
Any tips, ideas, documentation, experiences, warnings, or advice are more than welcome.
In case you wanna clean the visco coupler - keep the heavy oil in a container and re-use later!
IMO there's no need for replacement ever (as long as it is there...), and operating steam engines (and the used Heißdampföl 305°C) are becoming rarer nowadays... :D

Regards
Lukas
Wanted: ANYTHING ORTOFON related to cutting...thx

Thank you Lukas. Great tips. I'll keep them in mind. I was going to ask about oil etc on the lathe.
