Hi Mark!
The link below was the source of the idea. It was the third HDD I tried.

Re: DIY build log
Hi Fellow Trolls!
I have a plan to see my scavenged neumann platter spin. I try it make cheap to save money to a decent cutter head, so i put the whole bulid onto an HDD motor used as a precision bearing.
It works, no problem with the 15+ kg mass, spins for looong minutes. It will be a belt driven solution, like an old western electric turntabe/cutter.
Any ideas/solutions/anything for a cheap but acceptable bearing or any experience about HDD bearig??? Thanks for the answer PM-s!

Re: DIY build log
hello, congratulations on the project is going very well.
My project is very similar to yours, I'm actually in version 6 of my cutting head.
I have had good cuts, and good sound quality.

Re: DIY build log
After a big break, i came back to the cutting. I almost finish my lathe, i bought a diamond and blanks from myshank, but i'm not sure about the cutterhead weight measure.
I use a jewel scale, at the same height as the surface of the blank. I set the weight, but its seems too light, its 15.6 grams I'm a little nervous, i don't want to destroy the sytlus with the first try. ANY suggestions???
Thank you guys!

Re: DIY build log
Status update!
The digital jewel scale went total crazy because the D1 magnet. Every measurement went to negative sign, so i droped this solution. Next one will be a micrometer scale like myshank mentioned http://www.myshank.com/scale.jpg
OR Any other idea? Thank you guys!
