need help buying a cutting lathe
hello, im Luna
me and my friends decided to start cutting dubplates and make a small label
I started investigating the this trippy and amazing world of vinyl cutting and its lovers, the whole thing with souri in south Germany, DIY cutters , vintage rek o kut and presto ect. ect. its like a movie screenplay and im really into investigating further but now I need your help
so I texted souri, and he said sourry but your country is too far away and not good for support.. (im from post soviet Georgia, TBS) I didn't really get what he said but so it be. then i tried to reach people from this swiss vynillium dubcutter and then i read a post here that said that the website is out of date and they don't sell them anymore. then i started searching and found out about Rek o kut and Presto, and still don't have much info about them, are they easy to use? will they need lot of fixing and is it possible to get one that does not need fixing? and wont break in 2 days? + can you please suggest other lathes that i can get?
im new to this, any tips will be helpful, thank you

Hello. The first suggestion to anyone interested in this hobby is to read, read, read, read, and read some more. The site here has a wealth of information on cutting. Buy some books like the Mastering Basics from eBay. Be sure you know what you are getting into before buying equipment.
As for buying a lathe, with enough time and money you can buy something that will be reliable and work out of the box. But, most older lathes do need work and maintenance to get up and running. Presto lathes are probably the most plentiful machines around. Most Prestos will cut in 33 and 78 speeds and can be adapted to cut 45rpm.

Presto cutters were configured to cut 33 and 78 when sold new. K series recorders could be made to cut 45 with an adapter sold by Presto but I don't think they sold them for long because of the take over of tape. You can't buy one new, only used. Folks generally prefer the 6Ns or 8Ns that use the same feedscrews for versatility. The K series are much less versatile than the 6n or other overhead systems.
As far as buying a lathe - here, eBay, and Souri are the main channels I am aware of for buying a machine. The other might be contacting eBay user rhythmshack out of Florida who consistently sells complete refurbished units ready to cut through eBay. He's sold at least 2 units in the past 6 months. I tried to contact him directly using some information located here on the board and through eBay without success. This is a hobby of patience and there are a lot of folks competing for the same things these days in terms of finding a machine and getting started in cutting.

If you cut on different RPMs (assuming your lathe supports them) you need to use different stylus for each speed? What i mean is "are there different kind of stylus for different rpm?"rsimms3 wrote:Presto cutters were configured to cut 33 and 78 when sold new.
