Diamond cut records not that loud

Hello everyone

I have an MSS machine with MSS cutterhead. I have been cutting with a myshank diamond on myshank blanks. All is going well, apart from I notice the playback sound wasn't that loud compared to a 7 inch single from the 1980's. About 66% of the volume.

Perhaps this is normal and the best you can get from a 1959 cutter head?

If i turn the volume up anymore I think it might blow the head (though I have a fuse inline).

The impedance of the cutterhead is 4.7 ohms and my input audio signal is around 3-4 volts.

I was wondering if i need new magnets. I have bought some nichrome magnets, but they almost seem too powerful! But perhaps i should install them.

Any thoughts anyone?

im sure you should be able to get louder cuts out of your head especially if you got a fuse inline protecting your cutting head.

For me I usually set my levels to the point where the fuse blows out and then replace it with a fresh one and back the volume down till the fuse does not blow.

From there I got a reference to where I should set my volume meter.
Thats how I adjust my levels and I get them sounding almost too loud to the point where the grooves collide and I have to turn it down a bit.

some people record differently but thats how I've been doing it.

Thanks I'll give it a go, and maybe increase the volume during the cut.
I was also thinking of replacing the magnets in the head too as they are old.

Hello. I have cuts much louder now. By turning up the volume and using more heat!
