Blank pressed records.... NOW!
While I am still super stoked to try out Mossy's specially formulated blanks, whenever they are ready, I am finally getting the blanks I ordered from United back in January. I only made 200 blanks, and they cost about $2.25 each.
SORRY>>> SOLD OUT!
The specs:
10x 7" blank pressed records, trans red vinyl (supposedly lowest surface noise), UK center (small hole can be punched out for large hole). Silver paper labels, I think. Maybe yellow. can't remember what I ordered, it's been so long.
They are shipping today, so I should have them soon. I will probably not be able to test them myself for quite a while, so I would really appreciate any feedback. Let me know if you are interested.
Again, hopefully Mossy and fraggle have a chance to do their blanks soon so we can compare!

I just got them.... Trans Red with gold labels and UK centers.
I tried them very briefly with one of The Shank's diamonds and they sound great. Almost no surface noise and good frequency response (as far as I can tell with relatively crappy hearing).
I've had people contact me wanting more than 10 blanks, but I really didn't order enough to "supply" anyone, just wanted to give people a chance to try them out. So, if you want some, I really only want to sell 10 per person.
Thanks!

Right. But someone, somewhere, differentiated them and gave them different names, based on their color, so we might as well call it one or or the other. You can buy rubies from Apollo, but a lot of old styli are clear sapphires. It's not like i said "tried a sapphire, did/didn't work, so I'm going to try a ruby." I had to call it something. The one I tried was clear, so I said sapphire. Since the stones have different names, it was totally reasonable for jay to list both in his post to differentiate them from the diamond.

Also, at one point, back when I was trying out all sorts of materials with an Apollo stylus, I did cut a good sounding groove onto a tan vinyl one sided record. I tried it again once or twice briefly and didn't have the sane luck, but I know it is somewhat possible, because I still have that record and it does sound good.
Maybe then you have got a best cutting angle. Because it shouldn't be a miricle. Or your stylus went bad when you tried other times?piaptk wrote:Also, at one point, back when I was trying out all sorts of materials with an Apollo stylus, I did cut a good sounding groove onto a tan vinyl one sided record. Corundum Connundrum, or corundum and corundummer? (;
Wow, you are right! Wiki explains that sapphire and ruby are _both_ examples of differently doped forms of crystalline Aluminum Oxide (aka corundum). The presence of chromium gives the ruby its color and also some laser and high temp capabilities. The presence of titanium and chromium, together, make a sapphire's eyes blue. ):fraggle wrote:Guys just for your info.
I really don't wanna sound like a cock, so just for clarification.
Ruby is Sapphire.
Only the color is different.
Cheers
Both should be around 9 Mohs hard! Diamonds, 10...
