Thanks, Leo. I purposely left Scully out of my original list as I was referring only to more modern machines that you would want to acquire.

I'm sure with new or re-lapped heads the Scullys would be fine but I wouldn't think that Scully would be preferable to the more modern machines from the 80s.

Scully and Westrex offered a complete package with tape machine, console, lathe, head and amps for a mere $1500 per month.. You can see their ad here from 1972 :

The Studer preview machines don't have a record head. A regular A80VU and an A80PRE are almost identical. The A80PRE has the preview head block with the extra head and rollers. The rest of the transport is the same. The preview head connects through the sel sync connector and uses the sel sync line amp. Since there is no record facility that part of the audio electronics assembly has a blank face plate (and no cards) instead of the adjustments. Inside the chassis the regular is the same as the PRE. If you can find a preview head assembly you could easily convert a regular A80VU. You'd have to cut the deck cover to size as well.

Here's some photos of my MCI JH 110 M, with preview head.

Notice there is no record button. It would probably not be so easy to ask Beatles to go back in studio and start all the recording all over again, because the cutter person accidentally pressed record over the master tape (Though, I believe they made copies of their master tapes.). Ha ha..
