Neumann VMS 70 price?
Hi everyone,
I have the opportunity to buy a recently commissioned and operational Neumann VMS70, with the VG 74B amp rack, SX74 cutting head and Technics SP-02.
It is really hard to get a ballpark on a value for this machine, any input would be helpful.

Re: Neumann VMS 70 price?
Hi There,
This reminds me of an occassion some 45++ years ago. At an Allnight Soul Venue a newish convert to Soul Music Record Collecting asked my opinion on the Value of a Particular Tune he'd just that Very Night purchased. I replied I thought it's value to be around £5. He immediately said "Oh No I've been Ripped-Off, Ive just paid a Tenner" (£10) However, I enquired if the Seller, had in any way forced Him to pay this £10 sum, which the Buyer Confirmed was Not the Case. I simply then made the Point, that the Bargain had been made, where as the Buyer, He'd agreed with the Sellers Valuation, so to Him the Record was Valued at £10. The fact that it was different to my own valuation was neither here nor there! As misjah so succinctly puts it

I thought you were already cutting on one, having trouble with stylus falling out?I.S.D wrote:...I have the opportunity to buy a recently commissioned and operational Neumann VMS70, with the VG 74B amp rack,...

How much was that one?
Re: Neumann VMS 70 price?
Yes, trouble with the stylus was mostly user error and inexperience.
I am unaware of the price of that machine.
It's difficult to price out a machine like this, it's worth as much as anyone wants to pay for it, I understand that.
I'd like to open the discussion and see what the community values these machines at, occasionally you see an unsold Ebay listings for $80,000 USD. Or out of date/fake postings, my research shows they are more likely in the $40,000 range at top dollar....

Yes, but how did you get the one with the stylus falling out? Did it just show up on your front porch one day?I.S.D wrote:Yes, trouble with the stylus was mostly user error and inexperience.

...
considering scarcity, there really is no "price tag" to be given to these, since they don't exactly roll off the factory floor anymore

Sometimes the best way to open the discussion is to be open yourself. Good luck.I.S.D wrote:

Seriously though, what's a sustainable price to you? We've all seen what a *free* lathe looks like (sorry Kris) and a 'turn key' system will fetch $100K if it's really all there. Whats a cheese burger worth to you? Depends on how hungry you are I guess.
Factor out how many sides you'll have to cut to break even on the machine and go from there?

A VMS70 or 66 with 74 head and electronics plus the Technics motor will run 3x what it used to easily

Re: Neumann VMS 70 price?
I would say $40k for a fully functional VMS70 would have a LOT of people rushing to the bank to make a withdrawal (or get a signature loan) these days. That's about what it was worth 8 years ago. And we all know what's happened to the market on these since.
