Amps ant the Fab 4

Post: # 7959Unread post mossboss

Hey all
I would have thought the amount of amps they would have used must run into hundreds if not Thousands
There is a great book called "Recording the Beatles" around the 450 odd pages with step by step of anything regarding recording sessions of the band
These may be in there or may be not
Who knows and so what any way
So they are real good if they recorded the fab's but not good if they recorded Jo blogs down the road
They are well made pieces of Audio gear no doubt about that
The price? over the top I would have thought
But the market always talks and we shall see at the end of the auction
The Thorens cutting lathe listed in Switzerland went for $4,500 USD I was quite surprised at that
Than again it is no different than anything else put up for sale on ebay
A worldwide audience with the ability to trade across the globe how good is this!

Cheers

HAECO cutting gear is very highly respected although there is not a lot of it around.

These have a 120v/60Hz power supply so they have only ever been used in the USA and I dont believe the Beatles (as a band) ever recorded anything in the USA so what's he talking about? What he probably means is that of all the records cut with these amps one or a few of them were Beatles records - and not original first pressings either, but USA pressings.

Not to blow MossBoss' trumpet or anything, but his VMS70 has cut everything from the Abba to Zappa. Somewhere inbetween those two are the Beatles and countless other artists. What would be more interesting to know is... where did these amps come from?

If youre looking for a nice pair of mono cutting amps these would be very nice. If you;re buying them for some supposed Beatles historical value, well... there is no such value.

Blowing Trumpets

Hey Aussie
Thanks a lot for that
You can blow my trumpet man any time
That been said it would just about go for every Pro cutting lathe out there.
There was never that many made any way by comparison to records cut and pressed
Considering all these years, about 100 odd that is
So many a lathe that are still running around nowdays, would have cut as you rightly said from A to Z
I like that
May be from Alpha to Omega, But your definition is more musical
Overtones of " Mastered By ???, Recorded at Abbey Road, Studio ?" I suppose
Ah well Such is Life
Cheers

Price is lowered to $2,000 - what was the price the first time these amps ran? This seems like a more reasonable price now, as a habitual window-shopper; I'd buy if I were in the market, and had a westrex or haeco to drive with it, HA - (I'm not associated with the sellers)

AND, the sellers have decided to step it up a notch...

Now, it's been used to cut the Beatles, AND, sat on by this Hot Chick!...

No just curious. He had a Neuman lathe he sold to Festival Records way back in the day. We pressed the Bon Scott/Valentines album for him way back in the day and our dealings with him were less than satisfactory. There is a Scully lathe somewhere in Perth and that would be a good find.

yes i do remember a lathe at the front window shop of Zap music store,(could be the one ) i used to go look at it after breakdancing on saturdays hahah.the guy in the shop said to me "forget it, you cant make records on that you need a factory".... the shop is a furntiure shop now and its 100meters from our studio..this other guy who owns an old skool camera shop down the road said he had a neuman and he sold it for scrap.(highly unlikely)but he knew about cutting.
the 6n in question is martins first lathe, iam sure he had many more ,the 2 heads are grampian and 1 other i dont know .also the dubs are EMI with that presto second hole 10inch...
the amp is missing because the guy that sold it to my friend would not hand over the amps without "that RARE? phantom comic" .. hahaahah crazy.
my friend(at an auction) has no phantom comics and did not know what this guy was on about hahahacrazy world..

"What's the general consensus on these?"

I know the amps well. They use a pair of 6146's in the output. RCA Victor was one of Holzer's big customers in the late 60's, most of their cutting rooms had these systems. However, there were so many problems with the cutting systems that RCA got their Princeton Laboratories to do a thorough investigation of the amplifier and recommend modifications. Tubes were swapped, I distinctly recall a 12AT7 being changed to a 12AX7a; the grounding was revised to reduce ground current modulation. The project was very thorough. Keep in mind, the design changes came from the smart guys at the Labs, not the record company techs.
But even with the changes, the amps were temperamental. And the build quality was atrocious: internal wiring glued to the sides of the chassis, crudely punched holes. I much prefer a Westrex amplifier.
