WTB - Professional Stereo Lathe

Does anyone know what kind of a torque a Technics SL-1360 has? I googled it and couldn't come up with anything. I have one, and it seems HEAVY DUTY. It's a beast. Wonder if that would work for a cutter?

Cool. Over spring break I'm going to try to rig something up using that and a rek-o-kut arm.Simon wrote:I would say that would be less or about the same as a 1200

Ok, I'm going to try again here...
I'm hoping to find either an older Scully or Neumann lathe with cutterhead and amps in full working order.
I'm hoping to spend 15,000 USD on the setup.
I live in Chicago, IL.
I am willing to rent a truck and get a friend to come with to pick up the lathe from anywhere in the US.
Would really love to have a VMS-70!

20K seems on the low side for a Neumann right now. You will be amazed how costs add up too. Monitors, Computers...a/d conversion. Misc cables, VU meters the list goes on.
I am just saying that you should have plenty of reserve cash on hand over and above the cost of the lathe. There is a lot you dont think about at first! Good luck on your search, they are out there.

Already have a lot of what you listed. I have written music in my studio for a long time now.concretecowboy71 wrote:20K seems on the low side for a Neumann right now. You will be amazed how costs add up too. Monitors, Computers...a/d conversion. Misc cables, VU meters the list goes on.

20K budget is just for the lathe, cutterhead and amps. I'm in IT. I make good money. I have been saving a while. I have more money coming. I feel like I'm speaking with my father....
Seriously, I've spent at least that much on all of my other outboard gear and computers.
You all going to start worrying about my mortgage payments too? You're sweet.

I wouldn't take it personally. 90% of the people that pop up on this site looking to buy a lathe (including me initially) have no real concept of everything that is involved and end up spending a lot more than they anticipated or get burned out really quickly after making a large purchase.
They are just trying to give you all the information that you need to make a good decision for you.
It's the internet. Everyone is anonymous. You could a wealthy IT tycoon or you could be hipster that just sold a song to an Apple commercial for $20K and wants to blow the whole load on a lathe to cut on when you aren't on tour or working at Subway. No one knows. But the people on here are looking out for newbies. And, I for one, appreciate that.

Good point. I appologize.
Sorry for being snippy. I guess you were just looking out for me Dietrich!
I do well financially. I have been saving for a lathe and researching lathes for some time. I've done mono cuts on older broadcast or home disc recording systems.
My studio is a nice combo of old and new. Lots of synth, drum machines and effects processors. DJ setup. Two workstations. Live PA rig with two MacBook Pros. Four ProFire 610's and an MBox. That's just the broadstrokes.
Been writing music and investing in gear for 14 years.
Have a stable career with opportunities to do side work. Totally ok financially. Totally know this is an expensive thing to get into. Totally know that this is old gear we are talking about and needs care. Have friends who can fix things. I do electrical engineering myself and have designed my own MIDI gear for the studio. I also know a guy who is an machinist and who can autocad designs for metal shops to fabricate. So, I think I will be ok with minor repairs myself. Anything else I know will require bringing in an expert for expert prices.
Thanks,
Todd

Hey dietrich, again I'm sorry. I do get a little snippy in the mornings.
FYI, I'm not buying a lathe to make money cutting records. This is not a business venture for me.
Likely I will be cutting some discs for others. But, wether I make a cent doing that or not is irrelevent to me. I simply want to finish off my personal studio with a pro lathe.
This is primarily for me, my band, and people I write tracks with.
I have found a lot of helpful information and people on this site already. I read a lot before I started posting. So, I am not new to this forum by any means.
I hope I didn't piss you off too badly...
