They are looking for a Neumann 74 lathe?
Is there such a thing?
Maybe looking for the head...I get it.

The lathe is called a VMS70 but it wasn't produced and sold until 1974. Possibly that is where the confusion comes from. Some parts have 74 in their part number to reflect that fact.
The only lathe I am aware of from Neumann that had a subversion is the 80's model. There were VMS80 and VMS82 one for lacquers and the other DMM.

Ahhhh. My bad. I was under the impression that both the p/d comp and the amp rack were both from 74. So, the original units that came out in 1970 came with the 60's SAL rack?

So, really, the first 70's models were just the 66 electronics in a new case. The actual lathe body was only slightly modified but otherwise looks very similar to the 66. Suspension is the same. And, then in 74 the updated electronics and head were released.

There are even small and subtle differences in the two VMS70s that I have.
The buttons on the far left for power and motor are in a different order, the underside of the turntable ring is tapered on one machine and hard 90 degree angle on the other. The knob that controls spiral time has a function when you set it to "sec" that puts a VERY short spiral and the second lathe you cannot even put the knob into that position.
Light bulbs are almost maddeningly different from lathe to lathe. I have found I think four different types between the two machine already.
Just a few of the things I have noticed so far.

They are all a little different but almost every sub assembly can be exchanged.concretecowboy71 wrote:There are even small and subtle differences in the two VMS70s that I have.
That's a calibration thing. Try swapping programmers between machines and you will understand. The knob that controls spiral time has a function when you set it to "sec" that puts a VERY short spiral and the second lathe you cannot even put the knob into that position.

Thanks Paul!
The calibration for that is the "sp" pot on the controller box, correct?
Do you know what the function of the setting called "sec" is on that knob?
I like using it for when I just need a very small track band say on a 12" 45rpm or a 7" 33rpm.
I found out my #2 lathe will go into that mode but you have to turn the knob counter clockwise....my other lathe, you turn the knob clockwise!

Just another position. It looks faster than 0.25Do you know what the function of the setting called "sec" is on that knob?
Are you talking about P11 Sp on the programmer? That's odd. I'm not sure what you mean "go into that mode". It sounds like something is not working as it should.I found out my #2 lathe will go into that mode but you have to turn the knob counter clockwise....my other lathe, you turn the knob clockwise!

Oh no, I just meant to get the time selector to go into the "sec" position.
On one lathe, it clicks in after .25 going counter clockwise. The other lathe, you have to go clockwise from 2 to get there.
Just a small worthless observation as to how these things are the same and interchangeable but slightly different.

Well, these popped back up it seems
The limiters were posted for $1 start price a while ago, now he has re-listed these for 1500 start price!
If there were this many eyes on it and nobody bid for $1, why $1500 now?
