Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
Hi all
For the past few years I've been building dynamic cutting heads, based off the T560 design.
The tests I've ran have come back great, using a custom made RIAA curve in the DAW. It seems to get higher up the frequency range than Souri's...
A friend has a T560 so I made it based around that but with better drivers.
Due to the size of the drivers and trying to replicate the build style / materials, the only downfall is it's ended up quite bulky...
Approx 130mm across, approx 85mm from the top of the body to the shank mount. BUT...
It works great providing a matching counterweight is installed, and the overhead is adjusted to suit.
It's currently wired to plug into my friend's setup (banana plugs and fuse holders for the drivers, and 3 pin DIN for the heater wires)
But there is plenty of length on those wired to chop and install whatever you may be running.
Here are some pictures and videos giving some examples of what it can do - the testing has been done with a local artist's bass music...
We tested a track that has been released on record and this head's cut sounded better, with only slightly less gain.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/19G8oq3d0-lOAHFJL_yBDLc5uEfRkf-Jb?usp=sharing
May suit someone with a blown T560 head, of someone building a lathe needing this final part ????
As it is somewhat experimental for the purchaser (needing to make their own RIAA curve...) I'd sell it for just over material cost + freight.
This is $600 NZD ($420 USD) + freight from NZ
Any questions are welcome
Peace from NZ
Brandon

Any more pics of the head?
You say it’s better than pressed records at lower gain, what’s it like at equal gain?
I’m guessing this is heavier than a Souri head?

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
Here's some more..
We ran it up to a good gain level to make sure it's capable and cuts solid with no signs of straining, then focused solely on setting up the RIAA curve for a while.
So haven't cut to what we presume it can handle gain-wise. The drivers are a fair amount more powerful than the T560's. When testing we ran 1A fast blow fuses.
With the curve fully refined, could possibly try using 0.5A fuses (just as a safety net before going back to 1A) and push the gain further.
Yeah, it's a fair bit heavier. but as I mentioned, with a matching counter weight, it runs great

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
hey, great work. ha ha, a souri clone! I like
a professional comparison of sound would be nice, bass is always a problem
with dynamic heads, I noticed the bass sounds so much better with feedback... unbeatable sorry
"better" = "much louder"? if so, that´s also fine, most people say, music is better, when loud
nice soundsystem!

Thanks mate
unfortunately I don't have any of the comparison info we took, my friend has that on his computer
but hopefully catching up with him in a couple of weeks..
I can understand the music is better loud thing.. haha, but I tend to prefer "music is better when clean and balanced"
last testing we got pretty far in setting up the RIAA curve, and just had a high mid area to tweak slightly.
the bass range though, we got sounding super nice and round. playback on studio monitors, dj monitors, and the system sounded heavy
that's a friends sound system. it's expanded a lot since then. 8 scoops, 9 kicks, refined high end using tweeters and compressions..

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
this looks great, are you open to questions from those who are building their own heads or is this a business venture and not in your interest to disclose trade secrets?
I mostly what to know what the deal is with the rubber car tyres!

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
It's potentially a future business project, but will answer some things that don't give tooo much away
the car tyres are basically just to replicate what Souri has done, however, I don't think they're actually necessary..
in this case they're just filled with polyurethane to act as a surround, and provide the moat for the grey "stuff" to lay in

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
looks good! try to make it feedback and you fly
Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
That's the plan eventually
bit more involved a build they are so wanted to get these working and finish a setup so I have a running system,
then will tinker with some feedback heads

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
This head is SOLD
but I miiight have another available in the near future
this other one has been tested, cut open to test serviceability, then resealed up
still functions as normal
Will post it here if it's to be for sale

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
bummed I missed this! definitely in the market for another stereo head.
would easily pay 2X for feedback

Forgot to say, thanks for the info in the posts above, it was useful
Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
Unfortunately I haven't explored building feedback heads, but I'd consider selling this 2nd head if you're interested ?
as mentioned though it has been cut open and checked for serviceability then resealed so it's not the tidiest visually.
but this won't be seen when it's on a lathe, as it's just had the rubber surround on one driver cut away then stuck back with black urethane.
No worries mate
Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
just another question, which may be useful to others and just something I'm curious about, how is the stylus held in this head?
you've kept it impressively minimal.

Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
Ouch, Styli don't like being bitten...imo
Wanted: ANYTHING ORTOFON related to cutting...thx
Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
Seemed like this is how the T560 does it, and the taper on the shaft is so shallow that it's barely a bite, more of a firm grab
Re: Stereo dynamic cutting head FOR SALE
interesting, I didn't realise this was how some were done. so do you make your own styli for this?
sorry for all the questions, despite being interested for a decade I'm still yet to see a lathe in person so am uncertain how they go together
