Since he got a lot of inquiries,
Larry Boden's making the following book available in a limited short run:

Now available::
Basic Disc Mastering, 3rd edition book (256 pages)
- Based on feedback from 2nd edition, of What Was Practically Useful and what wasn't, this version has a trimmed-down list of appendices.
- See the Table of Contents in the item description from below link, for list of which appendices are maintained in the 3rd edition.

Why not just make it available as an electronic download so the print costs are NIL...?

Whats online is the first edition, 50 pages long, just Larry's original text, reproduced without Larry's permission.

What's for sale on ebay, is the authorized third edition, 256 pages long, produced by the book's original author, Larry Boden.

I know I have both the hard copy and the fake copy from online. The hard copy is the best one as it is the latest fullest copy with the greatest number of pages....I am suggesting that it should go online in a limited format and provide a future income. The interest is not going to go away but the information will with the passing of time...

I too would happily pay for the full edition in pdf but it guess the issue there would be it finding it’s way online for free and the publisher then losing out.

I just talked with Larry by phone about these points, since they came up here on the forum.

So:
1. At this point in time, there's no plan to switch to electronic copy of the book.
2. Please support the author if you're interested in the book, with the 256 page 3rd edition printed copy.

Checked the 3rd edition, and it Does Have Exact dimensional diagrams of the facets of several "models" of cutting stylii that were for sale in the vinyl heyday, with measurements in fractions of Millimeters.

Now, when you say, "a Guide for making cutting stylii":

I don't know if such a thing exists or not, specifically for disc mastering cutting stylii,
but I suspect that's not what you meant, just the Info on Shapes, Facet Dimensions, Angles...

(but of course there are guides / videos / books out there for Jewel Lapping/Faceting, and very-small-scale metal-machining, i.e. watch-making, etc. . .)

You need to find a jewellers faceting machine, not cheap there is plans for one in Wireless World it is for Thorns I think if I recall, it's the same principle just you need a harder diamond cutting wheel to cut with. Not sure what you would need to cut diamonds with but it would work for sapphires and rubies...you then need to source the correct diameter shanks for jewels and sapphire diamond and ruby rods you should find it all by a simple internet search....try here for Wireless World ok I think it is 50s but what year I do not recall....I have not indexed all my files yet....so I cannot tell you....

Hi,

On the cheap, look into template faceting. Since you are making simple geometry, you only need a few templates and a lapping wheel setup. You can DIY a machine for very low cost.

Thanks for that, that’s the sort of thing I am after. I will have to figure out exactly what’s needed but a general guide on shapes and angles is what I’m looking for. There is a bit of info online but not much.

I have a good quality faceting machine and a stock of sapphire to play with, just short on time!
