Record Cutting Party!
Hey trolls,
We've been working on a travel lathe for the past year: a modded ROK Imperial that's easy to move and get setup so we can do events around town, and bring with us on an upcoming trip overseas. The illustrious markrob helped us mount a motor onto the faceplate and hook up the amp onto the same board as the controller. We have a few big events coming up with the machine, so we were a little worried: how can we test the whole setup in a safe environment before bringing it out for one of our hourslong events?
So we threw a record party! Katie manned the lathe all day, and I loaded up peoples' songs and checked levels and all that. We cut ~22 records during the afternoon, and everything worked great. We're confident enough to bring it to the library this Wednesday, and then out to a science museum for a demonstration on Friday.
Here are some photos a friend of ours took during the event. Happy cutting!

That's super cool! Did you flip the motor upside down instead of poking out of a whole in the plinth?

Yeah, it's a new build stepper motor Markrob put together for me, mounted to the plinth so we could tinker with it a lot to dial it in. Very low noise, a little hum behind the tracks, but you'd never hear it unless you were cutting a voicemail that needed to be cranked on playback (which I only know because we cut a lot of voicemails at our live cutting events, haha). Just one of many small adjustments to our "travel lathe" in order to get the weight down for better ease bringing it to events!andyburnout wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2026 7:26 pmThat's super cool! Thanks Kyler! Honored to be a part of your first LT post, haha.fortuneavestudio wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2026 1:04 pmThese pictures turned out great! Looks like it was a fun party and a really good time!

I'll have to go over his posts again, slowly working on a traveler too.displacedsnail wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2026 12:00 pmYeah, it's a new build stepper motor Markrob put together for me, mounted to the plinth so we could tinker with it a lot to dial it in.
