Book: "Basic Disc Mastering" by Larry Boden [Link]

A spot for keeping track of especially cool (informative, fun) videos, photos, scans and other links about record cutting. (You can post them in other sections. Eventually they may end up here.) NOTE: Please put *Circuits, Schematics and Manuals* in the section with that name.

Hi,

First post on this great forum to say that I'm really, really interested by this book too.

If the author is ok, and it's seem so, it would be great to get access to this important source of knowledge.

Regards

Z

Good News: Spoke with Mr. Boden tonight: An updated edition of his disc mastering book is in the planning stage. He or I will keep you updated when it becomes available for sale.

Please support Mr. Boden in these efforts, and purchase a copy of the book from him when it becomes available.

Is it possible to place a preorder?

What about the old PDF, will it be available for download?

How is Larry? I heard he was having a tough time in the 90s...there was a newspaper article about him that told of medical issues and he was working at a fast food joint. A shame! I knew him in the '80s. Great guy!
Kevin, he's told me he's doing Alright now, much better than in the '90s, now with a comfortable gov't job. (I had seen the same article you mentioned; that's the main reason I decided to try & talk him into re-publishing his book, & offered to do the re-typing / layout.) He's thinking about creating a foreword for this edition of the book, to tell some of his story. Also has some good additional technical info to add.

Thanks for the interest, I'll mention you asked,

- Bob

Interestingly, the Full Sail music school is claiming an ownership interest in the "1st Edition". I have talked to them a couple of times in the past few months about allowing a PDF download version, but have not gotten far.

Earlier inquiries of mine to Full Sail yielded deafening silence....

PLEASE DON'T COMMUNICATE WITH FULL SAIL ANY MORE.

I am working with Larry Boden to produce a 2nd edition.

I was mistaken in my initial assertion that Full Sail owns the copyright:

Upon careful re-reading, ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE OF THE FIRST EDITION, IT CLEARLY STATES LARRY BODEN IS THE SOLE COPYRIGHT OWNER, NOT FULL SAIL - you can tell them that if they have said that they think they own it. They don't, Larry Boden does. Full Sail was just the distributor.

Thanks for your efforts to "keep the book available", though!

BTW, the 2nd edition is progressing nicely - LOTs of great NEW info he's shared with me to be added; it's getting to be a Pretty Large Book, and will definitely be worth whatever reasonable price he will end up selling it for! I don't want to say what price I'm pushing for, until the book is "finished" and we discuss it, but I'll be pushing for CHEAP AS POSSIBLE.

THANKS for your interest.

Not yet published, but definitely in the works; progress being made every week. Larry's got a lot of great info added to 2nd edition.

Will post here when it's done & available for sale - sorry, no realistic time estimate (but a "total guess" might be Jan. 2011?).

Also will try & remember to PM those who've expressed interest, incase you're set up for email notifications...

Hi Larry,

Blast from the past! Great to see a post from you! I remember when you first published the book. As I recall Dave Hernandez took the pics for your book. Last I heard he was working in San Diego in a video facility. It's possible he still has a set.
I took many similar microscope photos of all the standard groove stuff for an AES presentation on disk cutting about ten years ago. They might be all you need for a new book. If you are interested PM me and I'll send them to you.

All the best,

Kevin Gray

(A year is long enough for a bump, eh?)

I'm wondering, those who have found copies of the first edition, how much have they been going for?

If I remember correctly, the first edition was downloadable from somewhere, probably here. It may or may not have been the full book. The quality of the photos was not high. I would think its best to wait for the updated edition seeing as much of the information in the original book (or sample that I read) has since been published, debated and discussed in further detail on the Internet and particularly right here in the forum.

Any update on the second edition?

Yes, It was download here I got a copy off a link here.

To be honest there's not any information in it that your not going to find somewhere on this forum. It was published in '81 so id say wait for the new one with the updates.

There is info on The Buchman-Meyer Calibration, and formulas for figuring out pitch and proper groove width. Maybe if its ok i can pm them to someone. But am not going to post them here.
