Video : Disc Cutting @ Dr Dub, Austria
I don't understand a word of German but this is great video.
I have never seen anyone clean a lacquer disc with Holy Water before, and nor have I seen a religious icon on a lathe but you will see it all in the first video in the classic Dr Dub style. (Note the "Class 100" Clean Room requiring the wearing of surgical gowns and masks).

holy water
well:
holy water == antistatic fluid, makes chip removal easier, especially on pvc blanks (thanks to andy b for the tipp).
as for religious icons we do have:
- mr ratzinger for reminding us to turn the cutter amps on
- jesus for nailing the settings on the manleys and
- satan himself for finding the right curses....
mex

I will admit that I smoked too while cutting records and as Mossy points out the Neumann mastering consoles have an ashtray built-in. I probably wouldn't smoke if I was cutting today (can't bring myself to smoke indoors easily except for when I'm visiting Mossy) but I always had my latte on hand!
The only problem with drinking too much beer I found was cutting the records at the wrong speed!

Cutting and waiting
Unless of course you are doing locked grooves or using "varigroove" Fat Laurie's way of adjusting the cut with his hand on the pitch control on the VMS
I come across his post on the PSW forum He cuts somewhere in the UK The varigroove name had me curious to start off with until of course I read his whole post Had a chuckle
Cheers

we bought the machine form a guy called brian east. (theres another post somewhere). to be precise, we bought it from his wife. brian was cutting for columbia records and emi in the late 60s and 70s. after he passed away his wife kept all his equipment in her house for years. she told us about this. so it's not confirmed. if anybody knows more, please let us know.

Not to mention that Holy Water for the cutter! (Becks Beer)! But only for the man who cuts, not for the board, otherwise the head begins to Polonaise Blankenese dancing ... laughing ...
grins

I'm still not a professional, but I learn pretty fast. especially with my eyes and ears!
